Gold wing airbag 2016 matt grey paint issues

Post by Gerry lecavalier »

I have had six goldwings from 2000 with many great miles! I just purchased a brand new 2016 airbag model with matt grey paint . The paint is terriblely fragile , At 500 km I wiped bugs off the nose piece and wiped paint off. After that all kinds of little marks appeared like rain marks, all over (almost every painted piece) that do not wash off. I only use Honda products to clean my bike . I purchased my Wing May 8, I now have over 10,000 km ( July 29/2016) . I have contacted Honda and my dealer ,but no reply other than they are talking to there technical department. This is very disappointing! THE BIKE RUNS GREAT ! But this is not right !! ANY ONE ELSE HAVING ISSUES WITH Honda paint and Warranty! !!!!!!!!!!

Any matt paint will get those little markings on it. I do not believe they are caused by water, but by oil. When bugs smash on the paint, some, if not all of them contain oily residue. I think you should ask Honda to paint the bike a shiny color, or repaint the matt and then clear coat it with a shiny clear, if you like the grey. The matt paint that is on it is probably cleared with a satin overcoat, but I don't think that would keep oil staining from the grey. If someone much more knowledgeable about paint can debunk what I have written, I would welcome it, as I am always willing to learn new stuff. As far as problems with Honda paint, I cannot tell you for sure if it is the paint, or what it covers that is soft, but Goldwings mark easily.

I believe this is a fairly common problem with the GL1800's now, when they moved production to Japan they changed paint formulations. I remember reading somewhere that they changed to water-based paint, but whatever change they made, it causes the paint to be extremely soft, fragile, and easily marked.

Thanks for the feedback. I am considering having all the plastic changed to another color with a better clear coat.
If Honda will go for that..

2015 black here. Yeah paint is pretty poor quality. Fragile, just piss poor. Everything else is awesome. Someday we will repaint. No comparison to US formula. The wind management is so superior to every other prior wing though. A whole new level.

Do not know how many you have stripped to the frame, but if/when you do, you will find yourself repeating that a hell of a lot.

I have the same problem with paint. I bought GL last year 2015 as new, but I see the paints looks as 5 years old car after
my actual 25 000 km. Is it fact I dont like dirty motorbike and quite often wash it.

I tryied use several different protective films as nanopolishs. And then polishs on it. The best of all looks Turtle Wax Nano. It has in it small elements (I do not know exactly if Na2SO4) and during polishing original paint is very slihgtly grinded and the surface looks quite well. Surface looks homogenous at sun shine.

What is saying Honda? They do not know that paint is bad?
