Year to be avoided?

Post by Phunnybone »

Starting the save-up to get a new to me 1800 process. Are there any years between 2001 and 2008 that should be avoided?

although I have an 04 and have had no problems, my suggestion would be to concentrate on the 06/08 models. I think they had fewer recalls.

Having said that, I would not be afraid to buy an 01-05 with low mileage(less than 100,000) if all the recalls had been done. (frame, ecu, and the rear brake recall.) Your dealer should be able to use the VIN and check if all recalls have been done.

Don't be swayed by a lot of chrome and other farkles unless you especially want them. I would rather get a stripped down(stock) bike and then add what I want it to have rather than pay for a mess of stuff I will eventually remove. Also get a Kelly blue Book and a NADA book value for the bike. They will probably list top and bottom retail prices so start negotiations from the bottom.

If it has been cared for and recalls completed, there really is not a bad GL1800.

Just an FYI
In April 2015 I got my new-to-me GL1800
It is an Orange 2002 - at the time it had 25,000 miles on it only , but had been taken pretty good care of.
I am the 3rd owner (the original owner sold it to a co-worker who sold it to me)
The brake recall and the frame check recall had not been done (they are now)
I paid $7600 for it - so there are a lot of really LOW mileage bikes out there waiting for a new owner.
The '06-'08s seemed to be the best..but the price tag was a disqualifier for me .
I like the '08 White ...but I am very pleased with my '02 Orange

I keep telling myself that the color doesn't matter because I can always have it painted later. Not too worried about chrome for now. If I wait until late fall, early winter the local prices should be a bit better. Seems that some of the dealer prices are actually better than the owner prices - guess that's what happens when someone falls in love with their ride.

I spent three years looking for the right GL1800 to replace my GL1500. I have looked and looked etc. Last week I could not make a deal on a used 1800. Dejected I looked through CL and found a local dealer with a $4,000 discount.

Now I ride a 2016 GL1800, Black and Silver and could not be happier. Thank You Rochester (NH) Motorsports.

Let me start by qualifying that I have an 04. The 2001 up to some of the 04's had a frame weld recall. Nothing wrong with the bikes as long as they were checked and repaired if necessary. If you look for a bike from that period be sure to check to see if the recall was done. My understanding is that the recall is now closed and it would be on your dime if there were a problem. If I were in the market for another used GL1800 I would look from the 06 on up. If you Google the GL1800 history you'll see that some of the changes from that point on were desirable. That being said overall there hasn't been major change in the GL1800's right up to the new 17's. Yes there were some changes but the main components of the bike are still essentially the same.

Several changes were made in 06 and up. Better alternators and better radio's. Frame problems were taken care of on the 05 models. I would look at no older then the 05 but if you can find a 06 or newer, go for it.
