New 2016 Base Model Goldwing

Post by raven41951 »

After 3 years of search and research of used and new wings, I found a great deal on a new 2016 Goldwing Base model. I would have like ABS but did not want the navi or XM due to the long list of negatives. Its the black/silver color scheme with matte black pipes and no chrome.

It has a USB connector in the trunk which also charges my iPhone but it only plays the music on the phone. For local rides where I have cell service I like to use the XM internet app to listen to my XM channels but I can't with the USB interface. I have seen the DIN plug adapter and power socket adapter available for earlier wings.

My question is this, does the 2016 have the din and power connectors under the left fairing pocket? The manual shows how to remove the pocket but I don't want to if the connectors aren't there, and I don't want to waste money buying accessories that won't fit my nice new ride.

I also want to put on a backrest but all I can find is chrome. Some offer covers for the bars but not the brackets. I am trying to keep the matte black scheme intact.

After 3 years with my 94 SE, timing belts, fork brace, shifter brace, etc. its fun to just have to worry about bling!

If you select the app on your phone after you plug it in, you can listen to the app. However, you may or may not be able to skip a song or do anything else with it from there. I listen to Pandora on the road every day and I can listen but can't skip songs as is allowed by the app. Look at the radio buttons and if you have an 'AUX' button, you possibly have the 1/8" audio jack plug but I would guess that you don't have the DIN plug as they don't hide those, they put them right out in the open where you can be in awwwwwwwwww.

The preferred backrest is the Utopia. It does involve cutting the seat for the bracket, but it has the cleanest compared to the others. There are NO bars showing, so you do not have to worry about chrome. They have two models, one is removable, the other has a fixed mount.
Cutting the seat is a little scary, but if you take your time and follow the instructions, it's no big deal.

I completely agree with the through the seat backrest instead of the one with bars and so will your passenger.

Thank you all. I will dig into these when I get time. With the Holidays approaching its going to get busy and snowy so I will probably not get to it until after the first of the year. Riding season is all but done here. Just a few odd days and they are becoming fewer. That should give me time to weigh the options, the results of which I will post right here. Tx again

There are power and audio connections under the left pocket. Since you have the base model, you will have to buy the interface cord. It plugs into the audio connector. Gives you a 1/8" connector to plug into the XM. You just hit the AUX button once, or twice to select USB or audio.
You will have to remove the left pocket to access the plugs. They are located in a boot toward the front. One red two wire for power and white three wire for the audio.

I added the Utopia rest. Works great. I have purchased the aux input and power socket for the left pocket. I had the Honda carpets for the storage compartments in my 1500 and like them so I added them to this one. Next will be SoCalMoto Gear LED driving/direnctional running lights.

I have a Sena SMH20 which I was using on the 1500 for phone and directions and am working a way to Blue-Tooth the 1800. A Blue Tooth RX/TX at the end of the aux input cord should interface to the stereo but I am still working out how to integrate the Sena. On the back burner while we alternate plowing snow and spending time at the Silver Dollar shooting trap (Dixie Grand Jan 22, Southern Grand in March after bike week).

While you are in the left pocket install your 12v power outlet. I have the one that is made for the Wing. It comes with instructions on how to install the unit and where to plug it in to power the outlet. That's in the same area as the AUX connection is.

Yes, I got the socket when I got the aux input cable. Watched the you tube vids and will again prior to install. Had the Utopia through the seat backrest installed by a local upholsterer as I did not want to ruin a brand new seat (I did ruin one on my 1500). They did a really nice job and no regrets about the extra $$.

Bike is away in a warm place for the winter and tough to get at to do the upgrades so I will wait until the road salt and sand are gone before taking it out. I also have some Bluetooth adapters to play with to see if I can interface my Sena 20s to the audio system. Again, not until salt and sand are gone because once it comes out, it stays out. Plan on getting plenty miles this year as all surgeries are done and I wont have the three month interruptions I had the last two years.

Keep in mind that the cutting of the seat will void the warranty on your seat. Also keep in mind that when adding accessories that are plug and play that normally when there are problems electrically that it is usually something that is not stock. I have a 2014 and these are very complex machines that are almost all computer driven. Something to think about. Enjoy the new ride.

I got the OEM accessories, learned from my iphone. I can't ride more than 100 miles (back pain) without a backrest and I didn't like the chrome bars, so that was not an option. The Utopia is the least "obvious" as well as cumbersome for getting on/off and I can take the pivot bolt out to remove it if need be. Going to go to Laconia this June to see JP and Kuryakin about highway peg/floorboard options. Nice to be able to flex the knees and hips on those long rides. Sucks getting old but still better than the alternative.

Thanks for the input.

I saw another post on the freewire and checked out both Sena and you tube. Looks interesting. I'll probably go that route.

I also saw the Sena Helmet. Wish I had seen that before I started all this. But....
