Polishing Valve Covers

Post by salty1 »

Has any one polished the aluminum valve covers on their GL1800 instead covering them with bling or painting them?

Not on my 1800, but did polish them on my 1200. I removed the valve covers and used an automotive stripper to remove the clear coat. Then polished them with scotch brite pads and a good aluminum polish, followed by a cleaning with wax remover. Wiped then down with denatured alcohol and then sprayed then with a high temp automotive clearcoat. A few light coats and I waited a week to allow it to cure completely before re-assembling. Time consuming, but the finish was still good after 10 years.
You will have to apply a protective coating or you will be polishing them all the time.
