Weight reduction thoughts

Post by Sailor Bill »

Hello,

I have a 2004 Goldwing 1800A and every year about this time I entertain the idea of buying a Yamaha FJR1300ES. The idea is to get a lighter bike as I usually go braindead once or twice a year and drop the bike. 2016 was a good year and I didn't drop it at all. I am 79 and approximately 165 pounds. What I seem to have discovered is that the FJR is significantly lighter but somewhat top heavy and also the seating is further from the ground. All that says is the only gain from the FJR is spending more money and occasionally doing 0-60 in 3 seconds but not having the comfort of a Wing. All that is to ask a bout ideas to eliminate some weight. I have removed the passenger arm rests as my wife is never going to ride with me. I can remove the luggage rack as I never use that. What I am curious about is if anyone has ever removed the entire passenger seat back and associated stuff like the speakers and small storage compartments. I also could easily do without the front speakers and if I could imagine a plug, the radio as well. These are all items that are above the center of gravity and seemingly make the bike easier to handle a no/slow speed. The front of the trunk would probably need some type of covering cosmetically. Any thoughts, experience removing these items etc. would be appreciated.

My suggestion? Do not lose weight... gain weight. Trike the bike and you will never drop it again.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

www.mblinnovations.com has a bagger conversion kit that removes the top trunk.

Also try looking for www.landinggear.com/gl1800.pjp; It is basically training wheels that deploy below a threshold speed.
