Keyless Remote

Post by winger05 »

Did all of the GL1800 Goldwings come equipped with the remote feature to open the rear trunk and saddles?

I believe they did. I have a 2003 and it came with it.. So it has certainly been standard since 2003... :)

I got my 2002 in December last year and it didn't come with it. Maybe just the dealer didnt get the remotes from the previous owner or is a UK thing with the HISS sytems fitted.

How can you determine if you have it or not? The original owner told me that he never received a remote from the dealer when he purchased it new with 0 miles. He also told me that he didn't even know about the remote system until now which sounds a little suspect 8-) Thanks for all of the replies and the good information.

If you decide your should have it, I strongly suggest checking the WEB. If you try to order the motorcycle remote from Honda it is hellishly expensive. Someone found that there is an exact same model for a honda car that costs about $20 the only difference is that it has a picture of a car boot (rear panel of a car) on the button to unlock the top case!! It is identical in every other respect to the goldwing remote (same shape, size, number of buttons, etc).

You could check to see if the receiver is installed on the bike---if you open the trunk, you'll notice some screws on the inner portion of the top of the trunk...if you remove the inner "liner" portion of the trunk lid, you should find a black box in there that is the receiver for the remote control.

All GL1800's for all years come with a remote. If you bought a GL1800 with 0 miles and didn't get the remote, then the dealer kept it. If you bought one used and didn't get a remote then the previous owner kept it.

Also, each and every owner's manual discusses the use of the remote. The manual also discusses how to program a replacement remote for your bike. You can order a replacement remote from the dealer or an online OEM parts site.

If you have a owner's manual, then I suggest you read it. It's full of good info that you may not know about the bike. If you don't have a manual, then I suggest you order one from a dealer or online OEM parts site, then read it.

Thanks for your reply Keyboard. I do have the owners manual to the bike and I have read through it, but let's be realistic, most owners manuals weather it be for cars or a skateboard includes items and/or "options" that they were not equipped with. Therefore, since the original owner told be that he never received a remote at time of purchase, it prompted me to ask the question here on the forum. Obtaining a replacement remote was not the issue, but spending the exuberant amount they want for one would be the issue if in fact my GL1800 was not so equipped. I do appreciate your reply as well as all the other replies just the same.

There I go again not thinking things through ...

You're right. Most owner's manuals discuss features and/or options which may not be on a specific unit. I failed to consider that point. I fully understand now why you posted the question. I appologize if I sounded so harsh about reading the owner's manual.

You didn't have excuse, you're right to say that

Have never say too much, look at the motorcycle manual, read it and consult with the slightest occasion for all sorts of things on our GoldWing.

*******UPDATE*******

I spoke with a local dealer service department manager and he has confirmed that my Wing did in fact come with the remote system. He told me that all the GL1800's were supposed to be equipped, but some of the very early builds of the GL1800's did not have the system as he had worked on a few that were not equipped for reasons he could not explain. He also tried to sell me a new remote for $93.00 which I passed on. My quest now is to find a replacement remote for a reasonable price.

Personally, I find what the dealer said hard to believe.

P.S., Good find flyboy2121!

I have to agree with you on this one. It does sound a little odd. I'm just glad all I have to do is obtain a remote to put this thing to rest.

Well, took my top box apart today to fit the rack and what did i find.......an elecronic box for the locking mechanism. I still need to check the lock mechanism are to see if there are motors there for the release actuation but you never know. Might just be there as well. I'm guessing that if theelectronic gubbins is there then the motors will be as well.

Fingers crossed.
