Intercom squeal

Post by Big Red Bertha »

I have a 2013 Goldwing. I have a squeal in the intercom system. The squeal is only while the intercom is on. The noise does not exist in the radio system or any other system. I recently purchased a trailer for the bike and had a new wiring system installed to accomadate the trailer and the noise started after the purchase. However, I drove the bike with and without the trailer and the noise still occurs. The noise is interment. I have taken the bike to a Honda dealer and so far they can't find the problem. This has been really expensive so far, but still no solution to the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Very often a squeal in an audio circuit is caused by a short in a microphone circuit. We definitely have a microphone in these bikes, so I suspect you may have a short in one of the mic wires.

Disconnect both the driver and passenger headset pigtails (the ones that have a square, 6-pin connector on one and the round 5-pin DIN on the other) and see if it still happens. If not, then plug them back in one at a time and see if one of them causes it to squeal.

Thank you, but I failed to mention I have brand new helmets and lower cords. These were purchased after the squeal started. I have disconnected the trailer and it still occurs and occurs with the trailer connected. This all seemed to start after the trailer vendor spliced a new connected into my existing power cord I had to my old trailer. However, as mentioned the honda dealer has spent two hours already looking for the problem and wants me to bring it back with the trailer for another attempt.

I'm not talking about the headset lower cords. I'm talking about the wires that go from the lower cords into the bike. They look like this:

Since you stated the problem started after a trailer harness was installed, I would look to that. It may have a skinned wire, or routed in such a way it's picking up interference.

Thanks for the replies. I have had my Honda dealership charge me for 2 hrs @ $120. an hour and found nothing. I will check the cord from the 5 pin to the din and see if that is the problem.
