GPS Tracker for Goldwing mounting advice needed.

Post by Davek80514 »

My Brother bought me a GPS tracker (GSM/GPRS) for my Goldwing. I'm thinking of using Freedom Pop (see link below) for the sim card for about $5.00 and no monthly fee. I'm not sure if it has an internal battery of not. So the advice I need is on
1. Where to mount it.
2. How to mount it.
3. How to hook up a battery to it so if a thief does steal it and disconnects the battery I can still ping it without it going dead.
Thanks in advance for the opinions & help.
Dave K.

You could connect a diode to +12 battery feed, and past that a supercapacitor. That will allow the battery to charge the supercapacitor. If the battery is disconnected, the supercapacitor will continue to power the unit, but because of the diode, it won't drain the capacitor back to anything else. Specs for this unit say its power draw is 0.2mA, so a decent supercapacitor should operate it for a fair amount of time.

Thanks for the information. That sounds like the thing to do. I'll look into that.
