Shake at 40 mph

Post by rexliggett »

I have an 2005 wing, at 40 mph when I let up on the gas, the handlebars shake, speed up it goes away. I just had a new tire and front wheel bearing installed, still have shake.
I was told this shake is common and Honda is aware of it.
Any ideas?

It is a well known problem on the 1800, not all wings do it, but all of mine have. I have never been able to stop it completely (just have to always keep one hand on the bars) but playing with tyre pressures can reduce the severity of the wobble. My current bike has aftermarket suspension (front & rear), fork brace, Tapered head bearings and the bike still wobbles at speeds under 50 mph if I let go of the bars.

Seems to be something you have to live with, Honda have done nothing to address this since the problem became apparent in 2004 so don't expect any miracle cure from them.. It's inconvenient and annoying, but most people just live with it.

Try Dyna Beads. They cured my wobble.

Thanks, I forgot to say I have Dyna beads in both wheels and it didn't change a thing for my bike (regarding the wobble).

Steering head bearings!!! May just need re-torqued. It is a common ailment on the 1800.
Some have installed All Ball bearings with differing results.
