Updates for 2003 Wing

Post by bstig60 »

Next week is work week. Adding CB and Antenna, running lights, Backoff module, trailer hitch and wiring. (5-4 adapter). New front radio speakers. Plus whatever else I can think of while I have the plastic off. Already installed Sirius radio and hard wired in the Zumo and added the intercom wiring adapter for the GPS. Will move the Sirius antenna to the rear of the bike, probably on top of the rear speaker. Any suggestions that I may have missed?.

Have you considered going "Dark Side"?
I am a Dark-sider and will never go back. 8-)

Car tires belong on a car and not on a motorcycle IMHO. So, no Darkside for me.

The 2003 models where recalled for frame cracking, Honda had to run an extra bead of weld to strengthen things, if you are removing a lot of the bodywork, I would strongly suggest giving the frame welds a very detailed examination to make sure no cracking has occurred.
I recently had my stereo system upgraded by Larry (at www.wingconnect.com) and would strongly recommend this update (look under Products & services tab, then find power Amp upgrade), it doubles the output power of the stereo and offers far less distortion, the turn around time from me sending in the radio, to getting it back was less than a week and the extra volume really helps when riding at freeway speeds, combine that with your new speakers and you will have a big improvement in sound. I would also strongly recommend fitting progressive fork springs and the rear shock spring. Your springs are 14 years old and probably tired (plus they where never very well suited to the goldwings weight) the progressive springs front and rear make a big difference to the handling and if you only change the rear spring, not the rear shock it is not very expensive.

Thanks for the response. Both the frame and brake recalls have been completed according to the previous owner. I am checking with Honda via the VIN number to be sure. However, I will check the frame again to be sure nothing new has occurred while I have it apart. Not being all that familiar with the 1800 as yet, where were the problems with the stress cracks?

Progress: Trailer hitch installed, 5-4 wiring adapter installed and I added an extra wire so I can pull either a 4 wire or 5 wire trailer. I have two trailers and one is 4 the other 5. Back Off modulator installed. Hitch was a bear with no directions, but I finally figured it out. Hitch Doc hitch..... Now for the CB, Arg! Not looking forward to pulling the whole top of the bike off......

Change the air filter.
Wire up a couple of songle pcb relays so the Common, NClosed and NOpen wires are available under each fairing pocket.
Run a couple of wires from the L fairing pocket, to the R fairing pocket.
run a permanent and switched live, and a earth to L&R fairing pocket.
If at first you don't succeed, hide the evidence.

Thanks, Air filter is a K&N, but it will be serviced while I have things apart. I have hot wire and ground in the left pocket, but will run both to the right front pocket if they are not already there. That is were the hard wiring for my Sirius XM radio docking station is going to connect.

For people like me who are much less tech savvy, could you explain this in simpler terms?

Thanks.. :D

Finished adding stuff with a couple of exceptions. Still have to add the Back Off and have the CB SWR checked. Have to pull the wheels and change valve stems so I can add my TPS Sensors. Took her for a 300 mile test run yesterday. Everything works and nothing fell off....
