Fifth gear

Post by Monny »

Lately when shifting into fifth gear it doesn't go in all the way when you give it gas it travels but 2 seconds to 5 seconds later the trans makes a clunking noice like it didn't go in gear all the way. I've checked the heal toe shifter it's solid, the rubber on the shift lever is good. Any advice on what it could be. Thanks in advance.

let's hope your not seeing the signs of loosing 5th gear. does it jump out of gear when it makes the noise
check the adjustment on the shifter, make sure it doesn't hit the floor board as it's shifting

When I had a Heel Toe shifter, I made a point of backing off the throttle and keeping toe pressure on the shifter to ensure that it went solidly into gear.

I found that a lot of times, it would move just slightly more and get solidly locked in gear, and not give me any problems after that.

I can understand why some folks like them, but they are bad news, and I won't ever have one again.

No it doesn't jump out of gear. Is there an adjustment on the lever going in to the trannie? It's hard to explain but I can fill it when I shift to 5th gear if it was a good one or not and I hold my foot on the lever but it still does it.

the only adjustment will be on the linkage for your heel toe shifter, what can happen is over time you get more movement on the shifter
arm from the bike so you don't get full travel when shifting. or it could be loose and moving on the splines. check that carefully, check all you points of pivot and shaft connections for wear and loose knuckles
if your sure your shifter doesn't hit your board then adjusting may not help
but you can either shorten or lengthen the rod that runs behind your board down to the knuckle to get better movement.
I think to get a better up-shift you would lengthen it a little
also try pre loading the shifter right before the shift, then give it a nice solid push with your heal but don't hold down on the shifter

What year is your wing? Is their any noticeable oil on the floor under the shift lever? Without the heal/toe on lever is it " loose"? Excess play? If any of these could mean the seal going into the tenants need replaced. Probably worse case would be the fork riding on the team shaft could be wore. That last is an educated guess.

If it turns out to be serious there is a guy in FL that has fixed a ton of bikes with the "Ghost Shifting" problem. He is a lot cheaper than the dealer. His business can be found at justwings.com.

Hi all!
Hope someone can help me out on this issue I have.
This started few days ago.
When I shift from forth to OD and release the clutch and I get a grinding noise and a clonck, it sounds like
The gear didn't go in all the way. Sound like a grinding noise and then goes in on his own with out me doing anything, is this what people calls "ghost shifting"?
There is any adjustment to do to fix the problem or the transmission has to come out?
Maybe it's time to traded in, there is only 106k Km on the addometer, it's a 2010 airbag.

I had the same issue a while back. I have worked on my technique when shifting. Pre-load the shifter. When I am ready to shift I release the throttle, pull the clutch and raise my toe to shift. all are done at the same time. my shifts are now smooth 90% of the time. The more I work on it, the better I get. When it started happening, I tried to take my shifts nice and slow, all that did is allow my engine revs to drop too low and the clunk was worse. It takes time to execute a smooth shift using that technique. but practice makes perfect

Good luck and I hope it is just an adjustment. But Honda has been known to have tranny problems. floor boards make it worst. If you have floor boards obn the bike and have tranny problems Honda has been known to void the warranty.

Wow ... 3 Wings on one thread. All with major transmission issues.

Sorry ... but you also have a serious transmission problem. Many will think they shifted incorrectly, but their issued is more major. As in the OPs case, not having it fixed, and possibly riding it one more mile, can drastically change the symptom. Some are left stranded with no forward motion, while others have dog clatter, while another I heard of, turned from a needed transmission repair, to complete transmission failure that resulted to a hole in the bottom of his engine case. While others will continue to ride, with their symptom gradually getting worst. A Wing that was left here just yesterday, was lucky. She was able to ride home from CO, to Florida, in 4th.

Your noise is called "dog clatter." On 5th gen Wings it can happen in any gear, with clutch in or out. I've documented it here on YouTube. In this video, I believe the clutch is in, and I'm shifting in and out of neutral.

5th gens come here from all corners of the United States, and Canada for transmission repair. Recently one was shipped from Los Angelos, CA, and there is another currently in route from, I believe Pittsburg, PA. I'm expecting it here today. They come a long way to have their transmission issues resolved.

One more thing ... for both of you "this is not you fault." It is a design problem. It has nothing to do with how you ride, how your Wing is accessorized, or how you maintain your Wing. If you want to think it is somehow your fault, then it is, but in a different way ... "your picker is broke." That means that you should have "picked" a different Wing to buy :(

FYI ... JustWings has re-machined, "corrected" transmission sets in stock and ready to be installed.

Thanks for the info to you all.
To Goldwing Greg:
My Goldwing doesn't make the same noise of the bike in the video, maybe I didn't explained properly,
After I **** from forth to OD a few seconds later I can hear a grinding noise like the gear jumps out and quickly goes back in, I'm sure there is a problem in transmission but doesn't happened every time I shift from Fourth to OD.
I have a feeling that the problem is the forks the one that pushes the gears in and out, sorry but I don't know the proper terminology of this part.
My question to you is what will be the cost $ to fix the transition?
If it is around 4K $ then I think I'm better off to trade in and let the dealer deal with it.
I would not sell private and give my problem to someone else's my conscience won't allow me to do that
It will be dishonest on my part.

You are probably describing a "hiccup or burp." That is when once shifted into 5th, for a slight moment you've lost power to the rear wheel. If you're able to monitor the tach when it occurs, you'd probably see a momentary increase in RPM's and then back to where it was once engagement reoccured.

The hiccup/burp can happen one of two ways. Sometimes when it happens, and the shift from 4th to 5th is made, the hiccup/burp will only occur one time once shifted, or it can happen multiple times ones shifted into 5th. Multiples times is ratcheting.

When I look at your avatar and see a trailer, and a side car, both represent tremendous add'l stress for your transmission to deal with. Because of that stress, my guess would be that your transmission quickly progressed from a hiccup to one that ratchets.

Yes ... the repair is more the $4000.00. If I were to repair yours, I'd be putting in 2014 gears. Honda changed 4th and 5th gear design from 2014-17 gears. Also, what I do here is under cut the dogs which then causes the gears to draw towards each other, wanting to stay engaged. With the stress you are putting on your transmission, you need one with undercut gears, and the newer style 2014 transmission. If you intend to sometimes, or all the time, stress your transmission with a trailer and a sidecar, you may likely have this issue with any 5th gen you buy.

If you need more info on pricing, feel free to call.

Thanks GoldwingGreg!
The one in the avatar is an 05 and has no issues.
The one with the problem is 2010 airbag.
Yesterday I rode 300Km and it did it only once 10 seconds or more after shifting from 4th to fifth but it was more like a Klonck similar to a normal shifting.
I thing I’m better off putting the 4000$ for the repair towards a newer goldwing maybe a 2017.
Thanks again for your help.
