2006 Gl1800 odometer

Post by RiderLft »

I've got a 2006 GL1800 with what I thought was a battery problem. Turned out to be a loose wire on the starter relay. Got that fixed but noticed odometer had reset to zero when battery was out. Now it only shows miles that have been put on since battery replacement. Is there any way to reset to show actual miles. No problem for me but if I have to sell the odometer is wrong.

I sent a PM to DaveO430 about this,

I can't recall this happening before.

I thought the odometer memory is static RAM, and if so, it should never, ever. loose a reading.

Batteries can go flat ( removed ) for months, and when put back in the odometer retains the actual mileage.

Dave got back with me, it is NV RAM, "non volatile" RAM....

but in your case, it got attacked by a vampire and drained out all the "good smoke".

Are you sure you're looking at the odometer? If you're looking at one of the two trip meters, I think they reset to zero when battery power is lost.

Good catch, that just might be what has happened.

It's not the trip meters they reset also but the main odometer went to zero. I tried to start the bike the starter clicked and everything went dead. That is when I replaced battery and still wouldn't turn over. Lights would come on but when I pressed the starter it would ckick and everything would go dead. That is when I found the loose wire on the starter relay, corrected that and have not had any problems with it starting or running just the problem with odometer

well, if it will start working, you have a brand new bike with zero miles on it

makes for a good selling point, right?

I would just make a notation in your maintenance log book, and on the cover page in the manual as to the actual miles when it zeroed out, and keep riding.
