Reversal on GL1800 2002

Post by paolo_leone » Sun Feb 25, 2018 3:16 am

On my GL 1800 2002, when I try to make a move on reversal, the bike try to start backward, but then stop suddenly. Is it a known problem? I wander if it is mechanical or electric.

I do too. Does it make a noise when it stops or is there silence? If it makes a clicking noise it could need the cables adjusted or if it just stops and you can release the button and then it will go again it could be the battery is weak.

As Dave said, cable or battery,

Thanks, but battery is ok. Motor starts very well. It is a strange behaviour. Trying to go backward, the bike makes something like a small jump, moving some millimeters, and then stops hardly like for a mechanical problem. What happens mechanically when I activate the reverse button? Is there any gear which should connect or disconnect to let the starter motor to drive the trasmission backward?

Even if the battery is good enough to start the engine it may not be good enough to run reverse, it happened to me. When you push the reverse button a servo motor pulls a cable that engages the reverse gear. Same thing that happens on a GL1500 when you pull up the reverse lever except it is done electrically on an 1800.

Great,Dave. Do you know where to find detailed tech. documentation about the tramsmission chain for reverse, including electrical switches, which, I guess, could be also points to be checked ? Indeed, if the electrical power is not enough to engage the servo motor, could be due to battery ( the first to be checked) but also to a switch not properly working for rust or damaged cabling/ connection.
Thank in advance.
Ciao.

Open your fuse box and check the #1 (rvs) fuse A.

I had a similar problem this morning and hope you found an answer that you can share. I was reversing out of my garage when the bike stopped. I could not get it to release from reverse or move in reverse. I shut the engine off and tried the switch several times. It finally released from reverse and I was able to restart the bike. I'm now reluctant to use reverse as I don't want to get stuck somewhere. Suggestions?

Service Manual > starter/reverse system > troubleshooting

"Motorcycle starts reverse running but stops immediately
1. Voltage to Starter Motor Signal Line Continuity Inspection
Check for a blown No. 11 RVS fuse A (5 A).
Check the starter/reverse motor (No. 12) circuit at the cruise/reverse control module (page 19-39).
Is there continuity?
NO–• Check for open circuit in the Pink wire between starter relay switch B and reverse fuse A in the fuse box.
• Check for an open circuit in the Pink/white wire between the cruise/reverse control mod- ule and reverse fuse B in the fuse box.
YES–• Loose or poor contact of the cruise/reverse control module connectors. • Faulty cruise/reverse control module."

That definitely sounds like a sticky switch that only needs cleaned with electrical spray cleaner.

Remove the right side engine cover (where dipstick is). You will see the reverse actuator assembly. Two cables, some linkage, and what looks like a spring. Spray some lubricant all over the spring (silicone will work, or WD 40, messy). Let it sit for a while and try it again. May take a few tries. Has this happen to mine and this fixed it.

As others have stated, most likely the battery of the adjustment. Just because the bike starts doesn't mean the battery is good as it should be. I would start by seeing if the cable is adjusted properly, and the battery cables are tight and clean. It's strange how a battery cable can come loose. A friend of mine and I stopped at a gas station. He has a F6B. After he filled up and went to start the bike it just clicked, turned out 11 of the battery cables came loose.

How many cables does he have on the battery?
