Repair of ABS plastic
Repair of ABS plastic
I am looking for the best way to repair a crack in the ABS plastic fairing on my GL1800. Any advise?

It's fairly easy to do - have a read through this thread: Bonding Saddlebag cracks

Re: Repair of ABS plastic
Get glue designed for ABS and use some type of backing material (fiberglass cloth works) on the inside surface... If it's in two pieces you can use acetone on each edge and hold them together... Once the acetone dries (rather quickly) you'll have a ABS to ABS bond... Need to be real careful about getting acetone on the paint though... Sometimes a Q-tip is a good applicator but you have to work fast (acetone dries quickly)...

Make sure that the ABS cement is black.

I got one of these kits.
http://plastex.net
Came with Black, White and clear powder for different applications. The video tutorials on the site helped a lot as well.

I have used Plastex... It's good stuff, but it is rather expensive (compared to Oatey) and it can be difficult work with cause it cures quite fast... The neat thing about the Oatey is that you can make the mend and then continue to apply more coats to thicken the area that broke (or cracked)... Also, you can purchase thin sheets of ABS on eBay and used it as a backer to further strengthen the joint... The Oatey glue really isn't a type of glue, but rather a liquid ABS plastic... You can make your own if you soak ABS in Acetone...

Re: Repair of ABS plastic
I just did a repair the other day, all I did was grind some ABS pipe add acetone and mix, I could vary the thickness from runny to paste depending on the job and it works great.

I first read bout Quarical in Motorcycle Consumer News, some years ago. Great stuff, worth the price.
