AUDIO PROBLEM

Post by poppajim »

I have a audio problem that is driving me nuts. It started last year all of a sudden we had no intercom and I could not speak to other bikes on the CB. It came and went all the time. We have new helmets with new J&M Headsets with new cords. Also I replaced my lower cord. Its weird I can plug my helmet into the passenger plub and use the CB but we can not talk to each other with the intercom. I had the bike tuned up late last year and he supposely checked the connections at the audio utit itself. I have a 2007 GL1800 WING . Any suggestions? PLEASE

You need do some step-by-step diagnosis to isolate the problem.

Can both helmets hear the radio OK when the problem is occurring? I'll assume this is the case.

Can both helmets hear themselves talk into the intercom? Or just one? Or neither? If it is just one, then try swapping the helmets so that the front uses the rear connector, and vice versa. Does the problem follow the helmet, or does it stay with that connector? Also try the same for the lower cords.

I've had this sort of problem occur before, and it was one of the teeny little pins inside the custom J&M connector that had been bent over. Check your connectors to make sure this isn't the case.

Hope you find the problem, have you had the top shelter to change the air filter or do anything else? Could be a loose connection somewhere. Common problem with Honda plugs not connecting all the way. Probably not your problem, just a suggestion

First its really a shame there are no many Honda dealers around like Harley dealers. I dropped my 2007 GL1800 Trike off at a local dealer hour and a half away. I told him my problem can not communicate with my wife intercom not working and I can not speak to others we ride with with the CB. I can hear them though. he called me up said it was fixed drove a hour and a half down there to find it still does not work after he told me he tested it . Still cant communicate via intercom. He tells me you can hear the music from the radio, thats not why i brought it here i told him. So we left it and they now they say its probably the Audio Unit. Honda is sending them a test unit to try and varify this. I know these a big bucks so I can only hope they know what they are doing. Any suggestions on finding a used unit?

I know these are new J&M headsets but if they use Z series cords make sure there is no gap between the upper and lower cord. We get a lot of calls and see this problem all the time due to the cords not being fully engaged. It takes a lot of brute force the first times these cords are used. The reason I mention this is that you said it was intermittent.
With the intercom turned up can you hear yourself in either helmet? Cannot believe both of the bikes pigtail connections are bad so if the helmet test doesn't reveal the problem then I would give Jeff at Sierra a call and he can help troubleshoot the problem.

My experience supports this. The "Z" series cord is the one with the "D" shaped connector:

Z-series connector
Z-series connector

When they are new, they are a pain to seat securely - you really have to push hard to get them to fully seat.

The problem was here before the new headsets. I called and spoke with Jeff at Sierra Electronics.Since the dealer already had the unit out of the bike I went and picked it up and sent it to Jeff. We will see, thanks for your thoughts

Well Jeff from Sierra Electronics says the audio unit is good. The Honda shop I have it at seems clueless. When they get the radio back they are going to call Jeff and see if he can walk them through it. It just sucks

Well after a week and a half at the Honda Dealer the problem is fixed. To be honest I think it was the drivers headset pigtail all the time. They thought it was the radio and took it out so I sent it to Jeff at Sierra Electronics. The radio was good and Jeff was very fair with me charging a small flat rate price including shipping back to them. They called Jeff and he walked them through a process of elimination but then they told me it was the GPS BOX installed on the bike. When I went to pick up the bike they could not produce the old part or a bill from where they said they bought it supposily for $80. When I questioned that they gave me back the bike with no bill even though I already paid them $160 the first time they said they fixed it. Another $100 shipping the radio there and back from Sierra Electronics so it cost me $260 . We shall see taking it out tomorrow.

If you have a passenger audio controller with volume control and push to talk for CB chatter, check that it is not activated or button pushed in. I had that problem and the button was pushed in accidently when removing the seat because the right side upper seat bolt is so close to that button when installing or removing. The control unit is a stock accessory and mounts under the right side passenger cubby.
It ain't the destination but the getting there. You are not lost until you run out of gas.

Thanks for that info. Since I posted last year the problem is fixed see my last post. Since then my wife got a Can Am and we bought Sena 10's so we can communicate. I also bought the Sena Freewire which converts my Goldwing Bluetooth. I can talk to my wife through the senas but also have my GPS , CB , Radio etc. I had a problem getting everything paired up and the Sena Rep met me at the dealership and fixed me up. Sena tech support are great to work with.

If your CB works when your helmet is plugged into the passenger’s plug, but not in the driver’s, it is likely the driver’s plug on the motorcycle is bad. The same thing happened to me. WingStuff sells a replacement that goes on pretty easily by removing the left pocket.
