Chatter/rattle from clutch

Post by Wingrider73 »

Hello Boys and Girls:

2005 GL1800 ABS 75,000 miles

I've been here before complaining about the chatter in my Goldwing clutch. Spent a couple days in Daytona and the noise is worse. When I start off in 1st and don't have enough gas it chatters. If i forget and start in 2nd the noise is really loud. So i do the man thing right? Put it in 1st, hold the brake and let out the clutch lever slightly - chatter. Still holding the brake and now letting the clutch lever out more - louder chatter. It seems just before the engine begins to stall the clutch slips, at least some. I can rarely choke the engine down by letting the clutch lever. What would be the average price for a mechanic to rebuild the clutch?? I live in North Florida near I10 - I75 interchange.
James

I've never heard of a GL1800 having clutch noise. What you probably have is an ADG failing. I've tried capturing ADG failure here. Although I was not able to capture the noise during startup in this video, often a failing ADG will rattle for a 1/4 of a second just as the engine begins to start. In 2006 Honda changed their design, but from 2001-05, a failing ADG is more common. If yours is failing, it will eventually become what is known as "death growl."

I do NOT hear anything abnormal in that video. Except for that stupid exhaust noise from a non-Honda exhaust system.

and he did a bad thing, he revs the engine right after starting it.
that is a no no..... plus, he never put it in gear and rode off.... that video is for crap.

he does not explain if the engine is already warm or not, but if it is cold, first start of the day, do NOT rev the engine and try to ride off.

my '02 sounds just like that and has for the last 17,000 miles and according to the PO, it has sounded just like that since it was new. I bought it with 97,000 miles on it, and it shows 111,000 today. runs like new.

The whirring sound is from the timing chain, not the ADG.

I use 5w40 engine oil, and even so, I allow the engine to start and go thru the warm up cycle before I get on the bike and ride. If the ADG breaks, it is a new engine ( for the bike ). you can't afford to have it replaced.

If your bike does not sound any worse than this, it is probably okay.
But your description is not making me think your bike is sounding like that one.

I will go make a recording of my bike and post it up after it loads to YouTube.

I have a short video sound of the noise but can't figure out how to upload to the forum. I have tried .MOV, .WMV and .MP4. Error message says I can't do either. So how do I do this??

the forum does not support video, upload it to YouTube, which is what I had to do.

Hope this works....
I uploaded the short video of the clutch noise I tried to describe.

Let me know what you think the noise really is. Pressure plate/disc going out, bearings, my concern for nothing, something else??
James

It's saying the video doesn't exist...

it says "Audio unavailable"

When you play the video on your PC, do you hear it okay?

Was this an audio recording, or a "movie" made on yur cellphone?

I have decent luck with recording a movie, and then uploading that, which is what I did for the YouTube "video" and sound track you can hear above on my post.

Follow this link, and upload the sound track, or movie, or whatever it is, to this link to my server.

I will download it and put it up for others to listen to.

I play the IPone6 "video" on my desktop just fine. Sound is audible.
Is anyone else having problems with the recording??

I drove the bike to a well-known mechanic in Keystone Heights, FL yesterday and had him take a look and listen. His opinion is definitely clutch. It seems that it is a major deal to access it for rebuild?? Drop the rear tire, remove the exhaust on left side, side panels, etc. I have seen a video where a guy repaired his by accessing the clutch through the left side by removing the alternator. Does anyone have experience at removing the clutch and rebuilding it? I would like to do the job my self if possible. I am reasonably mechanically inclined, but.... Don't want to jump in over my head without knowledge of what I'm getting into. Both the Honda dealer in town and this mechanic quoted a price of $700 - $900 for cost. A lot of money saved if I can do this my self!! Is there a shop manual out there for download? Does anyone have a manual and able to copy pages and send via PDF to me??

Opinions please.....
