AUDIO ANTENNA

Post by POPPY'S WING »

Hi every body. This may be a stupid question. I took the rubber ducky antenna mast off my Goldwing and replaced it with factory one. The new one has a little orange cap on the tip of it. Does this need to come off?IT seems it wouldn't come off. My reception is seems no better. I could be paranoid. APPRECIATE Replies.

The plastic cap means nothing and does not interfere with your radio reception and does not need to be removed. The little rubber one was probably just as good, as it was a wound wire coil to give it the frequency ranges. If your reception is not good, there could be several reasons. First, are you certain the antenna lead is solidly plugged into the back of the radio, and if so, that the lead from the rear of the bike to the front is not broken at some point (frayed lead casing or crimped lead with maybe a broken wire)? Hope this helps as it is all I got.

Is it an AM station, or an FM station. FM stations do not always have a great range, usually limited to line of sight which can be as little as 15 miles. Terrain inconsistencies can also block FM signal. Commercial FM can boost their signal to get as high as 30 to 40 miles, but not much better than that.

Keep in mind that an antenna booster is just an amplifier, and it can only amplify a signal that is already there. If the signal is so weak that it is buried in noise, then the noise will be amplified just as much as the signal.

You need to make sure your antenna is in good working order, and feeding the strongest possible signal (good ground, no pinched wires, no corrosion on the hinge, etc.) before trying to amplify it.

Radio reception is strange. I can pick up some FM stations better in one vehicle then in another in the same area.
