Slow tick under or forward of fuel tank near instrument panel

Hi everyone and greetings from Australia

I have a 2004 GL1800 and it has developed slow tick which is highly audible. The sound is NOT coming from the engine and comes off and on at will. Sounds like it emanates from under or forward of fuel tank, or near instrument panel. Key points:

- the ticks are about a second apart
- the bike starts/ performs normally
- increasing the throttle makes no difference to the loudness/ duration/ timing of tick
- cycling various electrical switches makes no difference
- it sounds like a piece of hard plastic being cycled against another
- loud enough to be heard when riding on highway

It comes off and on - ie it will go for two minutes then stop perhaps and minute, start again etc. Driving me mad and cannot work out what it could be. It is not affecting performance one bit as far as I can see.

When it is doing it, put your hand on each headlamp. Can you feel it ???

If so you will probably need a new headlamp adjustment motor.

Dude, can't thank you enough. Walk with a spring in your step knowing you saved this Aussie guy a trip to Mr Honda. Yes it was the left headlight motor, so I removed and binned both. Set up lights manually. The tick was where a worn sprocket was clicking against another. I could not see wood for trees,

You've probably already discovered, that to stop the click, unplug the connector from the motor. If you are leaving the motors out, be sure to cover the holes with Alabama Chrome (duct tape). If the holes are not covered, dust will enter the lamp assemblies and begin to coat the reflector surfaces.
