grinding noise

Post by go1dwing »

My 03 1800 was working perfect. Today I started a 200 mile ride. 50 miles out of town while in overdrive the rpm increased and the sound of clicking and grinding started. Coasted to next exit and headed home. I was able to ride in next gear before OD. Approaching home I down shifted and it shifted but still made noise in every gear. The grinding stops with clutch in. Any ideas?

I wish I had an answer for you. I'm posting so when somebody else post I will get a notification as I'm curious as to what the problem is. This is a good way to learn. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help.

Hi go1dwing,

Try re-posting this in the 'GL1800' section. More 1800 owners will see it, as technical problems tend to get missed in the 'Goldwing Chat' section.

Please keep in mind that it can happen in any gear and under more conditions that what is shown there. However, the sound is similar. I believe in that vid, the clutch is in, and I'm shifting it in and out of "N".

Great vid and info. That is what my 03 sounds like. So, I looked up the dog info and it looks like the trans has to be removed along with motor. Have you tried fixing yourself? I have the large Honda manual and I might try to tackle it. Your thoughts!

Yes ... my shop has repaired more GL1800 transmissions then probably any shop in the world. Most who do it themselves find the engine R&R extremely challenging. On a 1-10 scale, it's probably a 10. As for opening the engine to get the gears out, most would call that repair a 10 too. So it's bacically two 10s back to back.

Thanks for your response. Last year I had overheating issues and lost 4th gear on my 95 1500 aspencade. I removed the motor and attempted to repair it. The only real issue I had was removing the carbs in order to remove the motor. The brittle wires and tubes did not help. I did not separate the crankcase as I noticed water damage on the internal parts. At that point I purchased a used motor from ebay for $300. Installing it went fairly easy. I did had an issue as to the correct position of the pulse generators. Thanks to this site I resolved that issue. Oh, I was challenged lining up the drive shaft and boot. After all that the bike ran like a new one. All that to ask: do you think the difficulty of the 1800 is less, the same or greater? I don’t think this bike has carbs?? I thank you in advance for your thoughts. By the way, I am not a mechanic by any means but I can read. It took about 3 days for the 1500 to get running again. Thanks again.

I have no idea. I totally live in the GL1800 world. Most any DIY who has removed and opened the case on a GL1800 will tell you that they will never, ever do another. Often Honda mechanics who have done them will say that too.

Thanks. The way I see it-if they can do it, I can too. The local Honda dealer/tech said the hard part is removing the motor. According to him, separating the crankcase was pretty much straight forward. He has over 15 rebuilds under his belt. My question to him was is it about the same as a 1500. Be has never touched a 1500. He was factory trained way after the 1500's. After this, I'll know. Thanks again.
