Hi! EVERYONE . My 2012 ,10,900 miles ,seems to smother ,when I start off. 1,2,3 gear noticeably. Lower speeds especially,the sound of the engine changes.My Honda mechanic says it's nothing. He says a lot of them do it. Has anyone had this before? Thanks.

I'm not sure I understand your meaning of "smother." Can you define you're experiencing in words ???

The only thing similar that I can think of with my 2016 is if I start moving before it is thoroughly warmed up. I'm sure ya'll know what that feels like. Is that similar to what we're talking about here?

Thank y'all for the replies. When I start off on the road in 1ST after a few seconds the engine sounds as if it has lost a cylinder,which it really hasn't. Go to 2nd ,same thing. It doesn't jerk or die or anything like that. It didn't do that when I first got it.

Could you be describing a flat spot that might be there for as much as 1-2mins after starting out ??? If after starting out it may flat spot, and if coming to a stop in a short distance, it might want to do the same. But after no more then 2 mins it is gone.

Is this happening after starting off cold, or after "hot starting" ??? A hot start would be when the bike is at operating temperature, and stoping for a short time like getting gas, and restarting the bike when the engine is still hot.

Some riders complain about it while other don't. However, there are a few things to check for. First, verify that the m/c is being operated when cold per the Owner's Manual. Owner's Manual > index > coolant temp gauge. Be sure you are following those instructions.

Next is to know that the m/c is being maintained correctly with correct parts. Be sure the correct NGK spark plugs are in your Wing and gapped correctly. Honda says they need to have less then 16k miles on them. That the valves are adjusted correctly (done every 32K), and that the air filter has less the 12k miles on it. Verify that your battery is correct, and that the connections are clean and tight ... Honda call for a 20amp/hr battery, it has to be tested, and have good health.

If all the above has been done, you can try a simple calibration procedure. Prior to doing this, be sure you center stand your Wing with everything off. Did I say everything ... because that is what I meant ... radio, CB, turn signals, ring-of-fire, all aftermarket stuff ... it all must be off !!! Then the next morning, start it with everything off ... don't even touch a brake lever to turn the brake lights on. Then allow it to run for 90 secs. That calibrate your ECM.
