I just replaced my ADJ at 185K. Mine did not "knock" There was growling noise coming from the vicinity of the alternator. In my case it was loudest just as I stopped for a light/stop sign when fully warmed up. Then decreased as the engine idled.
What year is your Wing ???
2006 Greg.

No it was just a growling noise...grrrrr grrrr grrrr. I told the Honda mech that I didn't hear it when cold. he said no its always there you just cant hear it because of the higher idle. I find it funny no body has asked.................where is the noise coming from??

What area is this knock coming from? front, back one side over the other???? If its one side over the other. I would suggest that the prospective buyer when time allows fire it up and while its running pull each spark plug wire one at a time and if the knocking decreases drastically well there's your bad cylinder.

I'd suggest you look only at 2006 and newer. The 1st generation were prone too frame cracking. Good luck i!

Actually, the frame weld issues stopped with the late 04 frame built in May of 04 and after. The 05s and up have had no frame issues, but there are advantages to snagging an 06 and up bike just for the increased cooling system capacity, improved audio system, and the redesigned ADG. Good luck in your search.

hi, asphaltmaniac

a short while ago i bought 3 goldwings ... '80 '81' and '82. the '82 is the one i am focusing on resurrecting; the other 2 are for parts. i have been reading on this site since i got them and this is the first mention i have seen regarding cracking frames. would like to make sure i don't have an issue there. can you tell me exactly where on the frame they are prone to cracking ?

thanks
joe

Not Asphaltmaniac, but the 1800s have some years that had bad welds at the main junction of the frame in front of the rear tire and had to be rewelded under a couple of service bulletins. There’s also been the same years with the upper tubes cracking near the passenger floorboards. The weld issues disappeared after the 2004 early to mid year models due to a improved process and the cracking tubes issue is virtually non existent on the late 2004 and later models that started using a different casting at the passenger floorboard area which reinforced the tubes. If you google “gl1800 cracking frame tube”, I’m sure you can find lots of images of these tubes that crack and maybe some pics of the old frame weld issue. Most of these frame issues were concentrated on the 02 through the early production 2004 models.
