gl1800 transmission noise

Post by lewhelm » Mon Sep 03, 2018 5:20 pm

My 2001 goldwing has a loud gear rattling noise when warm, in all gears, under load while accelerating between 1600rpms to 2900rpms. This just started when it reached 98,000 miles. No noises in neutral, no noises in neutral uphill or downhill, no ghost shifting, no shifting problems. Anyone have any suggestions ? thanks

I dunno if this will help at all, but are you sure it is gear noise? Could it be pinging, or pre detonation noise? What fuel are you using and when was the last time you changed the spark plugs and the Air Filter? Maybe I am way off base here, but from my limited experience, Goldwing GL1800s do not make gear noise without some or all of the other things you mentioned. Greg will be along to let us know if I am mistaken. I think he is the tranny guy here.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Greg, I have the "dog clatter" just like your video on my 1500. Is this just a normal thing or should I have a repair?

I'm sorry but I totally live in the repair world of GL1800s, so I really cannot answer that with any expertise, knowledge, or personal experience of what causes it on a GL1500. However, if your question has to do with a GL1800 .... absolutely it needs repaired. On GL1800s it can leave you stranded with no forward motion. Also, the longer it is rode, the longer metal filings wear into the main/rod bearings, will damage the oil pump, and can damage the crank journals.

The cause of this in the 1500 is pretty much the same as in the 1800, and the "repair" is generally the same as well: engine replacement. You might want to read this thread: Rattling noise in engine 1500cc

The good news is you are only about 60 miles from GoldWingrGreg in Zephyrhills. He is the man to see to get your bike fixed, better than new.

There is a guy on another forum that has a 2003 that was totaled. His engine and trans are fine. I don't know what he's asking for it, but he's on Goldwing Owners Forum. His handle is armsrn. This might save you a bundle.
