Flushing Brake System

Post by freedomrunner »

I have a 2008 Goldwing with a 2008 Motor Trike Spyder kit. I had the bike serviced and inspected by a Honda dealer in Ohio which suggested that I have the brake system flushed. I drove it home, about 100 miles, and made an appointment with a local dealership to have the clutch system, radiator and brake system flushed. Two days later, I picked up the bike, went for a nice ride and parked it. Several days later, I looked at the receipt and saw that it said Flush "front" brake system. My question is, can the front brake system be flushed without flushing the rear system? If so, would a Honda dealer, really flush just the front system and not touch or mention that the rear system should be flushed? Is the brake system on the MT kit designed such that a Honda dealer won't flush it?

Thank you,

Head Scratcher in INDY!

My question is, can the front brake system be flushed without flushing the rear system? There are like 6 major trike kits for a GL1800, and some separate front from rear, while others are integrated, and then there are ones that originally separated but in their newer years integrated front and rear. However, in answer to your question, yes ... the fronts can be bled or flushed separate from the rears.

If so, would a Honda dealer, really flush just the front system and not touch or mention that the rear system should be flushed? Many Honda dealers do not like working on trikes and will do various things to avoid working on them.

Is the brake system on the MT kit designed such that a Honda dealer won't flush it? If they don't want to, they won't. I'd suggest calling them, and give them the benefit of doubt that somehow there was confusion in regards to what you requested be done. Also, your Wing probably need SB-23 completed. See the link and pay particular attention to pg14.

Thank you for a very informative and helpful response. I called the dealer where I had taken the trike and was told that the secondary MC was replaced as well as the fluid. That answer made perfect sense when matched up with your response.

Again, Thanks

Did they say why the rear brake m/c was not replaced per SB-23 ???

Also, you should have paperwork showing what they did even if it is covered under a recall.
