2006 engine noise adg?
2006 engine noise adg?
i got a 2006 gl1800 and it has been making this noise for sometime. i really haven't got around to fixing it yet, but i took a video of the noise. surprising the video makes the sound louder. in person it is usually not that loud but I'm concerned its an adg. it doesn't make the usual failing adg noise when in gear and the clutch is let out slowly or doesn't seem to get worse when you twist the throttle. the noise goes away when you get it past 2000 rpm. Its mainly an idle noise. does this sound more adg? Or I'm hoping maybe its a bad alternator issue

Sounds just like my 08 did from new and still did when it met it's unfortunate end at 122000 miles, and like my 2010 at over 80,000 still sounds like that.

That noise wasn’t there when I first got the bike , it came up within the year and has been progressively getting worse . Bike only has 35k miles on it ... It’s hard to pin point with a stethoscope because it sounds like it’s coming from everywhere

I have a 2010 sounds a bought the same only when cold. When moter is at running temp.the sound goes away. Went out west put over 7600 miles on July it did not fly apart. Pulling a Bunkhouse camper in Yellowstone national park 39 degrees in the morning To Redding California 115° Still noise Whe setting over night. A bought 20000 miles on now

What does it sound like when you hold the clutch lever in while running?
Re: 2006 engine noise adg?
There is no difference when I pull in the clutch. The noise stays consistent at idle and goes away around 2000 rpm.

Yeah I here it and yeah it sounds like my 07 it has 62k miles. I've often wondered what it was, my 1500 had about the same sound and i put 130k miles on it before selling her. I was gonna check the alternator bearings over the winter when I have the tank out to replace the shock.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.
Re: 2006 engine noise adg?
Yea I going to get my alternator rebuilt first and see if the noise goes away because there seems to be a possible noise coming from the rear bearing .. but the noise was coming from everywhere when i stethoscoped it. Just trying to get input because I know how the adg can be on these bikes and want to spend as little as possible if it is a adg

For whatever reason, most bad noises are loudest at the alternator's rear bearing. It is common to hear growling coming from that area. To test, listen to another one. To eliminate the alternator, it is best to install a known good one and retest.Alias69 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 10, 2018 4:53 pm Yea I going to get my alternator rebuilt first and see if the noise goes away because there seems to be a possible noise coming from the rear bearing .. but the noise was coming from everywhere when i stethoscoped it. If you have yours over hauled, from Honda, order in both front/rear bearings, new brushes, the o-ring, and the front seal. When I take alternators in for repair, my alternator shop says that he can get bearing for as little as $5.20 each, and cheap bearings like that are not what I'm after.
Is there a difference in noise at the back of the engine, and then at the rear case ??? Sometimes the gasket between the two will help separate the noise.
Re: 2006 engine noise adg?
No difference from the front engine and rear case , makes the same noise and it progressively gets louder by the time I make it to the rear bearing of the alternator. It costs 125 to rebuild the stock oem alternator instead of buying a new one for hundreds. I might try that first and see what happens. If the noise is still there I can only assume it’s an adg or maybe something else.

Yes that sounds like the ADG...I got mine replaced in April this year with 186100 on the clock. To save a lot of cash I completely stripped the bike down to the top of the engine and then hauled it to Honda They pulled the engine ( thought about doing that myself but chickened out) and while they were at it I had them check the clutch assembly that added $39. Parts $625. Labor $858. I now have 196500 with no problems.

Yes my noise seemed to be coming from everywhere as well..I took it down and the nice tech came out for a listen and gave me the news.Asphaltmaniac wrote: ↑Fri Nov 30, 2018 8:01 pm Yes that sounds like the ADG...I got mine replaced in April this year with 186100 on the clock.
