I'm not sure exactly because I have never had them apart but from the pictures on a schematic the disc pad is different sizes. As in a different pad width.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

I looked the different generations up and the 2001 to 2017 clutch packs are all the same.

Re: 2001 gl1800 clutch plates
I just purchased the three plate part numbers listed at the Honda dealer for a 2001 to 2003 gl1800 clutch. the pads on each plate are same size and thickness,,,the number of pads around the plates are the same. so what is the difference?

Re: 2001 gl1800 clutch plates
Disc "B" the most forward one, has a difference ID and is know as a "judder" plate. If I recall, it's identified by a green tab. Disc "A's" are black and "C's" are blue. Other then a different identifying tab color, I beleive their friction material is different.
All 2001-17s have a total of 8 friction discs. All have 1 "B", with 2001-03 having 4 "A's" and 3 "C's". All others have 6 "A's" and 1 "C".
Since the 2001-03 were the fastest years, possibly that is why their clutch disc stacking is different from the later years.
