Hey, Robert
First off, welcome aboard. If you take a look in the DYI section of the 1800 forum here, there's a thread on removing the entire front faring. That should get you where you need to go. Good luck and ride safe.

As far as I know, with the 2001 through the 2005, the headlights come off with the front fairing. Only after the fairing is removed can the headlights be removed.

Remove the following:
- meter panel
- shelter
- remove the rivets the hold the upper vent ducts in place
- garnish
- windscreen
- lower center cowl
- front center cowl
- visor
- inner cowls - left and right
- disconnect the headlamp motors
- unbolt the 3 bolts the hold the front cowl on
- put a towel across the top of the front fender with a small 2x4 on top of the towel
- pull the cowl loose from the left side first while disconnecting the headlamps, then right, remember the headlamps, then the ambient temp sensor and the bank angle sensor on the right side

Once the cowl is off, remove the headlamps assemblies
