Drive train noise in neutral

Post by larrythecabinetguy »

Just acquired a 2005 GL1800 abs with 51000 miles. The bike appears to have been well taken care of although I do not have the maintenance records. When I picked it up I started the bike to check it out and load it on the trailer, and it seemed fine. I hauled it home and cranked it to get it off the trailer.
I noticed a rattling sound when it was in neutral coming from the interior of the drive train or engine.
The sound continued with the clutch pulled.
It diminished almost, if not completely when the bike was placed in gear.
I have not had it on the road yet but there is no problem going thru the gears and the friction zone is smooth. I have had another 1800 and a 1500 and never noticed this noise. The oil was changed recently by the previous owner and do not know what he used, although he stated he always used Honda products per the manual, and he gave me several Honda parts along with the bike so no reason to doubt his word. Any tips or similar experiences, please.

Park the bike pointing uphill, shift to neutral and listen. Then turn the bike around so it is pointing downhill, shift to neutral again, and see if you hear it.

Just came back in from checking the bike again to make sure I had the symptoms correct. The noise does diminish with the clutch pulled back.

Finally got to take the bike out to an incline. I cannot tell any difference in up or downhill position.

That's good news, that eliminates the (extremely expensive) worn shift fork issue as a cause of the noise.

Thanks Inkman and Wingadmin. I do recall similar noise on my 02, but not to this extent. The oil was just changed before I got it and will get in touch with previous to find out what he used. Not sure it would make any difference, but there is a little more valve tapping than I like. Sometimes my old musical training causes me more grief than it's worth!

Is that valve noise, or the injectors firing?
