undercut transmission noise

Post by lewhelm »

I have a 2001 gl1800 and had the transmission undercut this last winter at a local dealer. The transmission shifts great, but has a very noticeable gear whine in 2nd and 3rd under moderate to hard acceleration.....is this normal for a undercut transmission repair?

The "undercut" part would have no effect on transmission noise, that is just the engagement dogs. The undercut gears they installed may be mismatched though. Gear whine is normal in an 1800 though, mine is worse in 4th.

All the gears of my transmission are original, only dogs undercut..Before undercutting slight gear whine in 2nd and 3rd,,,now whine loudly that my passengers ask what is the noise from.I have been told undercutting can cause the gears to mesh differently,,,causing increased whine..Does anyone with a undercut transmission repair have any experiences like this?

Any idea who undercut the gears ??? Did they undercut your old gear set, or install a gear set already undercut ??? Is your whine getting worst ??? I do more undercutting on GL1800 transmissions than I think any shop in the world. Some shops do undercutting cheap by shortcutting the inspection process. What they don't understand is removal of the transmission is not a 30min job ... so thoroughness is paramount. Without test riding it, my guess would be that there might be a bearing going bad. A proper inspection of the entire transmission, as well as other bearings is critical for a good repair.
