Reverse gear questions GL1800

Post by controlu »

I live on a narrow lot. My car is in the carport and my trike "tent" is behind the car, looking at from the street. To ride I move the car out of the way, back the trike all the way to the street or back it in when I get home. Problem is, it's about 50 feet. Only a 3" or so drop for the first 15' and the rest is flat.
Reverse speed is akin to a stampeding snail. Will running reverse that long several times a week create problems? I there a way to increase the MPH of reverse gear? Is the answer that I reverse half way, let it rest and then finish?

Reverse is accomplished by using the starter motor. I would think that yes, 50' of reversing twice each day on a consistant basis could prematurely wear the starter out, or overheat it, and a trike would increase the wear and overheating due to the extra weight. If it was mine, and if I was healthy enough, I would be doing some physical pushing and save the starter. Maybe an electric winch so you could winch it in backwards all the time so you can drive it out?

I know of no way to increase the reverse speed.

Since it is a trike, another option would be some kind of spinning platform to park on. Ride in, spin around, ride out.

Is that 50' drive so narrow you can't just back out of the carport then do a tight "3-point" turn around and drive the trike forward the rest of the way? Or maybe "back and fill" a couple times? Might save wear on the starter...

I like the "spin around" idea. Gotta cogitate on that a bit.
