Adding chrome parts to gl1800 goldwing

Post by Roypaul »

Just had an interesting experience. I love chrome bits on my bike. I was just adding some to my gl1800 and discovered a MAJOR PROBLEM!
I replaced the plastic part around the key with a lovely new shiny chrome one- it’s also plastic but is chromed.
I tried to start the bike and all it did was turn over and not start- also the “Hiss” system light came on.
I found out that the chromed plastic interfered with the signal from the key and stopped the bike from starting.
I was ready to call a tow truck and take it to the dealer which could have been really expensive.
DO NOT CHANGE THE PLASTIC BIT UNDER THE KEY,
.

I have that piece changed on my 2009 GL1800 for the chrome one and it never gave me one bit of trouble. It must be that we used different brands of aftermarket items.

Maybe the key recognition system was changed on the 2005.

The American bikes do not have the HISS system.

There ya go... so the Canadian bikes do not either. I did not know the European/Australian versions used it. That would make a huge difference in what you could put around the key hole.
