Replacement 2014 Tail Light

Post by auriferous »

My 2014 GL1800 picked up some "hangar rash" in the form of someone cracking open the tail light in a parking lot. I figured I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to maybe a different style such as LEDs. However, I'm having trouble finding a replacement lens (the red outer transparent plus inner black housing) for my series of wing. This is the upper left light on the rear of the trunk with the running and brake lights, not the lower section with the turn signals.

I've seen plenty of replacement bulbs for all years, and plenty of replacement lenses for the 2001-12 series, but nothing besides the OEM replacement for 2014 lens only.

Does anyone know if there are replacement lenses available, especially aftermarket that might include some LED or other setup?

Thanks.

You can use the OEM lens and just replace the incandescent bulb with an LED. SoCalMoto gear has them as do Cyclemax and Amazon.

I just replaced my rear bulbs with LEDs. Now I have to swap out the Flasher as the OEM flasher does not work well with LEDs (rapid flashing due to resistance). I have the flasher but need a full day to take the nose apart to get at the flasher. I tend to take my time so that it goes back together the same way it came apart. If I rush it I end up with spare parts.

What I'm finding is I will need to spend ~$100 for a new OEM lens to replace the broken one. For that money, I was wondering if there was an aftermarket part that fits and might include the LEDs. If not, then I guess I just replace the existing and keep the incandescents.

The reason for the question is that I'm seeing lots of aftermarket lenses/housings for the 2001-2012, but not the later years. Does anyone know why? Do the older ones fit the newer wings as well? For example, if I wanted to add some chrome, there are many options available for the older years, but not the more recent.

It sometimes takes a few years for the aftermarket people to get on board with any accessories. Sometimes, they just never do make some parts for some bikes. It is pretty much the luck of the draw. If you have done enough searching and not yet found an aftermarket taillight set, then perhaps there isn't one. I would think, however, that if it fits a 2012, it just might fit a 2014. The problem with parts that supposedly fit 2001 to 2012 is that 2012 has a different tupperware body style and nothing for this fits. 2001 to 2010 would make sense, and they did not make a 2011 Goldwung. 2012 was the first big style change.

The 2012 and 2014 use the same assembly. Also, I replaced the ones on my 2012 with lights from a 2010. Perfect fit.
As far a LED's, you can get replacement bulbs (LED). I wouldn't get the ones that have integrated LED's. Some had problems with bad LED's, which meant replacing the entire unit.

Make sure the flasher you are going to install is compatible with the Goldwing Turn Signal Cancel unit, those are a micro processor and are very sensitive to incorrect input and grounding, The cancel unit is about $145.00 and not a lot of fun to change.

If you have comprehensive insurance on your bike and the deducible is low enough, it may be worth contacting your insurance company to see if they will cover the damage.
And any tail light assembly from 2012 to 2017 will fit your 2014, there may be some on E-bay.
