need gps suggestions

Just bought the Goldwing gps input device and need suggestions on a decent gps that won't cost an arm or a leg. I don't do touring so I don't want the costly motorcycle gps. Tried using built-in Goldwing gps and don't really like it. I don't care to much bout hearing music are answering cell phone calls. Just want to get where I'm going without getting lose. I read where I can use/plug into my cell phone but would rather use a regular gps.

I'm using an old school Garmin 2797 mounted halfway between the hand grips on a RAM mount off the right hand grip. I drilled a hole in the case, soldered an audio cable across the speaker voice coil leads, and ran that thru the case. made that about 18" long, ran that lead down the handlebar to the Aux Input to the Intercom. works like a champ.

if you don't mind an older GPS look on ebay for a zumo 550 ( i'm looking for one of these ) or 450. if you need to update the maps you can pay garmin for the update and I've seen a few 550's for right around $200 with the M/C harness. if you find a 660lm or 665lm even better just make sure you get a wire harness with what ever you get. i'm using a 660lm on the Mighty ST 1300, the wing and GSA share a 660lm

There are tons of options out there, and I found the ZUMO units too pricey for me. I went hunting and GARMIN sells factory refurbished units that look and function like brand new units. I got a NUVI 760 for cheap that had been factory refurbished several years ago and I love it. It has several features that you won't normally find on the GPS's sold recently, like an audio output jack, a cradle that gives you all of the connections without having to unplug anything. This unit also has a jack for an external antenna, which I have as well. It also has an input for connecting to your phone for audio input in case you want to sync it to your phone.
I mounted this GPS in a RAM MOUNTS "AquaBox" and it stays there nice and secure and DRY! Guaranteed to keep the rain off and not get inside as long as you seal where the wires come in.
Go to GARMIN's website and search for factory refurbished, you should find something there that should work with your budget. Oh, I also got lifetime maps and traffic with it.

Thanks guys the info is much appreciated. I don't mind the older ones and refurbished is ok also. Just one that's working so I'll know where I'm going. I will definitely check out the ram Aqua box. Look for a referb Zumo. They are waterproof and sealed for dust. They are also built for the road shock on a bike. Mine (550) is about 15 years old now and still going strong. Because it is waterproof you can use it when it is raining. With a car unit in a case, you can't use the touch screen if you want to.

both of my 660's were refurb units that I've never had a problem with. at last years Goldwing doc's gathering the 660 on the Mighty ST1300 didn't lock in the mount ( my fault ), it decided to dismount while making a left turn on to the main road. I heard it hit the ground and slide across a couple traffic lanes screen side down. I got the bike parked then walked back to get it. the screen wasn't cracked so I put it in the mount and made sure it locked in this time and it came right on working as it should, I did loose the beauty trim ring that goes around the unit but it works as it should and its still waterproof

The AquaBox screen protector allows through-the-screen operation of my GARMIN, no problem.... might not work with phones however since they have a different touch screen technology, capacitive rather than pressure sensitive.

thanks guys for all the suggestions on the gps. I bought a used nuvi 760 on ebay and am waiting for arrival, should get it by the 18th. of this month. Will post back as soon as I get it all together. Got the GPS input wiring hooked already.

I have one like that. It's a NUVI, not sure if it is the 760 or not. Been on several different bikes. It works great. Mine has a SD slot I put an SD card in there with music i=on it, you can tune it to an unused FM station and get everything into your head set.

Sorry I'm late on posting. I've been on the road at several trap shooting events. I WAS a long time Garmin user. Got tired of them dropping support after a few years forcing an upgrade to a newer model.

I have a gps in my tundra, but Toyota is no better than Garmin or Honda.

Now I use my iPhone and Waze. If I need to hear it in the truck I switch input to Bluetooth. If I need to hear it on the bike, I have BT earplugs used for shooting that connect to the iPhone. Yes, I have the Sena 20s but I an not satisfied with the sound quality. My old ears don't agree with them.

I have several Garmin GPS units that are 15 years old, and they still update with LTM maps.
Just updated all of them last month.

Brought up to current - new buttons, digitizer, etc..

I'm not sure why you're having troubles with Garmin giving you updates. Like was said, they have been consistently updating, even for the really old Nuvi 760 I have. Are you sure you're not confusing Garmin with MICROSOFT? (just kidding since dropping support for the older stuff is Microsoft's tactics).

Steve, I cant recall the models I have had but it started with hunting. I purchased two units from Cabelas back in the 80s. The only reason I don't have them anymore is that they "grew legs". I purchased a RINO in the early 90s and still have it. It did go back to Garmin once for repair and still works great. It served as my first driving gps as well. I have all the base camp/basemap topo CDs for the USA and Canada (I had a hunting camp there) which stopped working years ago and I could find no help from Garmin. I have since had three or four Nuvi LMT units which would update automatically once installed and configured via USB. These also worked fine, for a while. I guess the L had been reached after a few years. Never did get traffic.

So as I said, the iPhone and Waze does a much better job for me. I still bring the rino on my now annual hunting trip, but the others in my "new" party have Motorola radios so now I carry two. The Rino way outperforms the iPhone in the woods.
