Cigarette lighter location
Looking for some ideas where to mount a cigarette lighter on my 05 1800. Putting one in the left pocket really isn't practical to use when riding down the hwy. I'm sure I'm not the only person who still smokes.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I tired it years ago. Got ashes in my eyes and then a hot cherry in my lap. That ended that.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
My cousin has one mounted center of his GL1500 but not on the handlebar. I believe it came with a changeable mount for handlebar or Ram mount and I believe the guy who installed it for him built it into a small unit along with another gadget. It does have a penchant for blowing fuses.
Not sure in the photo if you can see the location.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I am looking for another place to mount the one on my 08. The PO mounted it on the brake res, and it is pretty handy, but I want that space for something else. Something with the least amount of disassembly would be nice.

I was thing about that too. I would want one to use as a power point. Recharge phone and things like that.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I just installed the "Electrical Connection" brand, version of this trunk plug, very easy plug and play install.
Comes complete with OEM connectors. Toughest part is drilling the 1 1/8" hole and making the keyed notch so it does not spin.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I put mine right below the key slot for the right side faring pocket. Works great if you have the space available.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
Other than left pocket and trunk, are there other power points available for 12v aux receptacle?
IE heated gear plug in points etc...
Those of you who placed a port near the center dash box key, what power connection is available there..
2017 GL1800....

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I have mine mounted on the right side just in front of my knee on the panel that has the keylock for the right pocket. There is a square piece that is supposed to hold the voltmeter.
If that area is blank, there is room for the lighter.
Run a power line directly from the battery with a 20 amp fuse. On mine, I used a 30 amp relay to power it and have the relay activated by the aux power connection in the fuse box.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
The original poster was asking about a cigarette lighter, not a power point socket. Lot's of suggestions for mounting a power outlet, but he needs to be able to reach it while he's riding to light his smokes!

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I hear what you're saying but i was just ageeing with Andy 27012 with mounting one in the trunk (easier)..but.. just to be clear what i meant..the original poster asked about a cig lighter,BUT..it is actually a power point socket he needs fitting....then he can place a cigar/cigarette lighter element into the power point to light his cig, without this it won't work

Re: Cigarette lighter location
I appreciate all the ideas. I've been riding and smoking for years ( a bad habit I know)I was just looking for some ideas where to mount one and you guys have come thru as usual. The PO put one in the left storage pocket below the rear speaker, great for using my portable air compressor not practical for anything else. I have carried an electric plasma lighter in my pocket that works great riding down the road but dont last very long. I'll just get a few more of those and glue a magnet to it and leave it on the side of my drink holder. I'm not drilling holes in my bike.

Re: Cigarette lighter location
Not supposed to actually touch those car lighters to the end of the cigarette. Supposed to just hold the lighter close enough to light the cigarette. That avoids the problem with pulling the lit head out and dropping it in your lap.paulr wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2019 6:10 am Nice one scott..![]()
as i said "when i smoked i often lit one in the car only to have the lighted end drop on my lap ( the baccy would stick to the lighted element and pull out) " usually on the bits that matter and more than once a hole burnt thro' heading towards the "old man"..I smoked from being around 10-11 years old for nearly 30 years... i stopped 32 years ago, never touched another

Re: Cigarette lighter location
The '08 I just bought has one mounted to the left perch. I believe it is from Show Chrome. He had it wired directly to the battery. I moved it to the aux port (switched power) on the fuse box since I no longer smoke. I used it to power my phone or GPS.
