Radio static when brakes are applied only on FM stero

Post by boogerrat »

I have a 2017 gl1800ac . When applying brakes the FM radio will have static and elect feedback. Only does it on fm and only when brakes are applied. The auxiliary input has no static. Thanks Randy

Welcome to the forum. Where are you from?

Do you have LED brake light bulbs or a brake light flasher? ABS?

Yes sir I do have led lights in the spoiler, no abs. I have unplugged the spoiler light but still have static when brakes are applied. Thanks for your help. Randy

I think I would check around the antenna for a bare brake light wire or wire that is running on top of the antenna wire. Also check your sockets for corrosion of loose fitting bulb.

Yes I was trying everything. I took it to the dealer on the first oil change and they told me yeah you got interference. Well can you fix it. And as you can see it's not fixed. I will look at the wires one more time and that might be it. When I first got home with it the rear speakers weren't playing. The bundle of wires that run by the trunck hinges I shook em and rear speakers came on and no more trouble with the speakers just static and ignition sound when brakes are applied. Thank you for the advice. Randy

Will it make the noise at a full stop or only when decelerating?

The static from the brakes any time they are applied even with the motor off. The ignition or alternator whine only when slowing down and only on fm. The aux input is clean if I am plugged into the phone for music. Thanks Randy

Check the trunk hinge wiring for the issue when slowing. There have been many odd complaints that can be traced back to those cables breaking, shorting. As for the static, clean and check all the ground points used by the lights and the radio, ant., etc. That would be the first thing I would look at.

I think this is a good indicator of where the issue may be. start at the speakers and work you way down the bundle and see if there is an issue. Also does it do it on the headset as well as the external speakers?

I don't have external speakers in the helmet so not sure on that one. My grandson gets off turnaround in a couple weeks and we're going to track the wires down and hopefully fix that thing. Thank you for your time Randy

I learned something interesting last year about LED bulbs and radio interference. I had two brand new garage door openers, and I swapped out the light bulbs for LEDs I bought off Amazon.

Once I did that, the remotes and wireless buttons would work once, and then not again for some time. So the door would start opening or closing, but then I could not stop or reverse it. I was puzzled.

Then I found "Garage door rated" LED bulbs on Amazon and purchased those. Problem solved.

It appears some LED bulbs put out so much radio interference that they prevent the remotes from working. That is, until the bulbs time out and turn off after about 5 minutes, and then the remotes work again.

I wonder if you have noisy LED bulbs in your brake lights, and you're able to hear them over the FM radio? Are there alternative brands that would not create so much static?

Yes sir don't think I have leds but possible. I bought the bike with 800 miles on it. It had after market sits, trunk rack, blue tooth which works great and no static. But unplugged it just to check. It does have the sol cal lights running and driving in the lower cal. So have to check on the brake lights and he could of changed those too. Also has a led blinker switch installed. So I will check. Thank you sir, Randy

If you figure this out please report back and let us know what was causing the issue. I find this intriguing. Thanks

The antenna cable runs under the seat and so do the rear brake light wires. Id have to say there's a connection there somewhere?

Yes sir there is. I have looked as t them a put a little of that elect grease on them but no change. I have read about the main lug under the tank they use lock tight and keeps it from getting a good ground. But I am leaning to a pinched wire by the trunk hinges. Thank you for your input. Randy

Well guys I give up on the static. Guess its satelite radio via blue tooth. Thanks to everyone who helped. Thanks Randy
