Decision to buy 2002 Goldwing?

Post by sgtcole69 »

A local guy is selling his GL1800 with around 30k miles on it. Im a total noob when it comes to Goldwings. Ive mostly ridden Harleys. He is only asking $4800 . As far as i can tell its very well taken of. He just had it serviced and put a new windshield on it. Also it has had the frame inspected for any cracks. I'm just wondering if i should pull the trigger and get the bike. Thanks again for in for any info or opinions.

'02 GL1800 lives in Dawsonville, GA now.
My son is going to enjoy it for many years to come.

not a bad price, probably in the ballpark.
My 2002 has 114,000 miles on it, still leaves me with many smiles as I ride.
I expect that it will still be a faithful servant after I die, and my son inherits it.

I would go for it myself, mileage and age have never stopped me.

I recently needed a good truck to pull a Toy Hauler that we bought before the horse...
Looked around, and found a 2001 4x4 Suburban with 212,000 miles on it.
Owner said for all the time he owned it, it had been serviced with Amsoil, as Amsoil was a sponsor for his racing bike, and he pulled a 40 ft enclosed trailer all over the country with it.....

I needed Front and Rear A/C as we have big dogs and they need space, it was perfect for my needs, and have not been sorry that I bought it. a new truck costs more than my house is worth.

Do you know anyone other than the seller that has a 2001 to 2010 Gold Wing that can look at and ride it for you?
The price sounds right but it needs to be looked at by someone that knows Gold Wings. I wouldn't buy a Harley unless I had a Harley familiar friend look at it so you need to have a Honda familiar friend look at this one for you.

Questions I would ask;
What accessories have been installed?
CB Radio?
Driving Lights?
Aftermarket Hand grips?
Highway Pegs?
Aftermarket seat?
LED or HID headlights?
Why was the windshield replaced? Is it an OEM windshield or aftermarket?
When was the last brake service done?
Has the two brake recalls been done by an authorized Honda Dealer?
When was the last fork service done?
Has the valve clearance been checked? Recommend by Honda to be done at 32,000 miles.
Did the owner install accessories himself or did he have a friend or shop do the installations?
When was the Air Filter Replaced? It is a 12 month recommended service.
When was the brake and clutch fluid flushed and replaced. It is a 12 month recommended service.
Has the coolant been replaced lately? A 24 month recommended service.
How about the Spark Plugs? 16,000 miles service recommendation.

Does he have a record of service on the bike?
Does a Service Manual and Owner's Manual come with the bike?

There are probably many other questions that could come to mind but these are off the top of my head.

I had an 02 and loved it. BUT there was several recalls and service bulletins on them. The frames were know to crack in places other than where Honda did the recalls. Not saying all of them had a problem but a lot of them did. Check with a Honda dealer and see what has been done to that bike. \

I bought my '02 5 years ago with 64k on it to replace my '90 that had 115k. I have not regretted it, the '02 has been great! All I can say is: if you like it, buy it.
