2003 GL1800 Starter Issue

Post by omega1967 »

Ok on this Goldwing that I just recently bought it has 135k miles on it, I went out and decided to go for a ride I put the bike in reverse and hit the button and I could hear the starter spinning but it didn’t engage anything, After a few times messing with it and rocking the bike back and forth it finally engaged it has also done this a few times when just trying to start it. Any ideas?? New starter?? Bigger hammer?? Thanks in advance. P.S. if a new one is needed is their a good aftermarket one??

Well, there’s two different systems at work here. The starter starts the engine and it backs up in reverse. When it failed to start, that can be caused by the sprague clutch not engaging. This can be a weak starter, wrong oil, resistance in the starter relay contacts, or a weak battery. When you tried to back up, did it make a ratcheting sound? If so, it could just be a simple adjustment of the actuator cables. The starter doesn’t use a clutch for reverse. Do you know if this starter is the bike’s original or has it been changed to an aftermarket version? There’s some real pieces of junk aftermarket versions out there.

Start by checking battery, load testing preferably.

Are you saying that you pushed the on/off REV button in, and then tried to start it ???

The bike was running and I hit the button it went into R and when I pushed the start button to back up it just sounded like the starter was spinning but no movement. The starter has never been replaced.

Ok, so it didn’t make a ratcheting sound, just the spinning sound. Has the reverse worked since you’ve owned it?

Ok ... if I'm reading this correct, the starter always works to start the bike. At times while running, switching the reverse switch on, and then pushing the start button to back up, it doesn't backup but you hear the starter spinning. If all that is true, I'd inspect reverse cable movement ... they probably need adjusted.

Ok, so now it just spins the starter when you try to back up. Are you getting a solid R light before trying to back up?
