Fuel pump, Anything else?

Post by Spence »

Last May I bought a beautiful 2010 GL1800 with only 1700 miles on it, that's right only 1700. So after replacing all the fluids and the tires I had a "new" Goldwing.
Last week after being already to head out for my first camping trip with a Bunkhouse trailer it decided to not start. Thankfully while still in the garage at home. It would turn over but not catch. Battery tested OK and there was fuel but wouldn't start. Relays and fuses all checked out. So I had it towed to the dealer and they said the fuel pump was bad from sitting with gas in it for so many years. It makes sense what with the lovely ethanol it our fuel now and I do not know how or if the PO treated the fuel. My question is would/could all this idle time affect any other components on the bike? BTW, it now has 7000 miles on it and absolutely no other problems.
Thanks,

I would think that you have pretty much answered your own question. If you have put 5300 trouble free miles on the bike since the fuel pump, it looks like you are good to go. Enjoy that bike. Deal with anything that comes along when and if it does. I have ten trouble free years on mine now.

Oh, if you don't know the condition and history of the battery, I would just change it and avoid any problems. If it has been changed, once again, enjoy that bike.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

IF, they are ridden regularly, they will run forever.

my '02 has the OEM fuel pump.... for winter storage, I use Sta-Bil 360 Marine and run the engine long enough to make sure it gets thru all of the injectors. best to pour it in with the tank is low, then filling the tank will mix it up good.

Thanks for all the reassurance here, I'm just glad it happened at home and not out on the road.
