What is a safe method to split/remove rear crankcase from the engine? It sits pretty well on the gasket and I suppose using hammer is not a way to go. All fasteners have been removed.

Rear crankcase separation method
Re: Rear crankcase separation method
I split it. Using piece of wood and hitting it with rubber mallet does the trick. Just takes a time and do it without hysteria - slow and steady - around the perimeter of the case.

Glad you got it.
I make sure that the dip stick is in and tight, and smack that area with a rubber mallet. Then near the upper left corner, maybe about 10:30 is a block of aluminum that I think an alternator bolt screws into, I place a 10" 2x4 there and smack that also.
