Greetings fellow riders,
Background:
Speedometer sticks around 70-80 mph. Tapping on cover will make it move. No issues at lower speeds. All other guages in cluster are working. I was thinking about replacing just the speedometer part...but, when I called Partzilla about buying just the speedometer the service person on the phone said the part (37200-MCA-971) was for 2002-2005 models. Seemed odd to me that 2001 models could not use this part since most parts are interchangable for these years.
So, 2 questions:
(1) is this true?
(2) can the speedometer itself be replaced or do you have to replace entire cluster assembly for 2001 models?
Thank you in advance.
Is 2001 speedometer different than 02-05?

I don't know why it would not. There is dash clusters on ebay for under $200. But since you need to get in there to replace I would get in there and see why it is hanging up and decided on getting a replacement then. Just my thought.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

If i remember correctly there was a recall or service bulletin on the 01 wing for that exact problem. You might want to check with your Honda dealer.http://gwrra-waa.org/pdf/1800SB8.pdf

There was recall on this. Look at this https://www.goldwingfacts.com/threads/s ... er.369209/ call Honda customer service if your dealer will not do the repair under the recall.

That's the lawyers at work. It's a legal buffer so they can't be sued for having one that indicates too LOW, and be implicated in an accident. It's why pretty much EVERY vehicle made in at least the last 10-15 years reads high on the speedometer.Deerskinlake wrote: ↑Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:08 am Hopefully more accurate than my 2007 speedometer!

Re: Is 2001 speedometer different than 02-05?
So, thanks to joeincalif. I investigated the service bulletin and it turns out both my questions are answered here:
(1) no, the part isn't different for an 01 than 02-05, however, for ABS models the part is a different part number than the non ABS models
Non-ABS Model
P/N: 37200-MCA-671
ABS Model
P/N: 37200-MCA-971
(2) yes, you can replace just the speedometer vice the whole cluster. SB shows replacing only speedometer.
My original confusion stems from info on Partzilla that shows fitment of MCA-971 is only for 02-05 models. According to Honda, 01 models use this same part.
Thanks for the help.

To order speedo, go here
https://www.partzilla.com/product/honda/37200-MCA-671
Also, Honda changed the design because of sun heat, or sun rays, warping the speedo backing and making the needle stick. However, although with their OEM windscreen it no longer occurred, warpage defiantly can with aftermarket windscreens.
