Reverse issue, button will not let it dis engage??

Post by jstoutj00 »

So, I know NOTHING about motorcycles except learning how to ride. I own a GL1800ABS 2014 and the reverse switch, when pushed, will not disengage or let go. It did this intermittently si I decided to not use it at all. I bumped it and now it will not disengage at all. Recently installed new battery, FYI, but the bike will not back up either. Is it possible I have it in gear as the reverse light comes on as does the F1 light on occasion. It used to be if I rocked the bike the switch would release, mind game I guess as nothing helps now. Before it would actually back up and now nothing. Please help. Thank-you.

The buttons on the handlebars as well as the buttons on the fairing seem to have this problem frequently as they age.
Dirt gets in the switch mechanisms and along with the grease that Honda uses, it make a paste and then the switch sticks.
You will need to get some electronic contact cleaner like this;

Or this:

The spary is supposedly plastic safe but I never really trust that to be true.
Cover the plastic parts of your bike you do not want overspray on. I use a Harbor Freight furniture blanket. They are cheap, under $4.00.

But anything will work to cover the bike in the area of the right handlebar, instrument panel and windshield area.

Spray the cleaner into the and around the switch area and actuate the switch in and out multiple times.
It will eventually come free. Don't be afraid to spray into the control. It may take a bit more than you think.

The best way to fix it is to take the handlebar control apart, clean it out, and re-lubricate it. But the above procedure will work for the interim.

One more thing, how does one take apart the assembly on the right handlebar?

There are two phillips head screws on the bottom of the switch control assembly. Remove them and then the assembly will come apart but it will take some patience and dexterity.

Actually the screws heads are JIS screws but it was easier to call them Philips. JIS is Japanese Industrial Standard and are slightly different shaped. A Philips screwdriver fits (kind of) but a JIS fits perfectly.
