reverse dilemma
I just got my 1800 out of storage and everything worked just fine, starter, reverse and etc. After waiting a couple of weeks for a part, I took it out for a quick ride. After about 5 miles, I stopped at a store to buy something and attempted to put it in reverse. It started to make a clunking sound, the reverse light flashed on and off. I decided to take it home fearing something was seriously wrong with it. When I got home, I shut the bike off and I could hear what sounded as the starter engaging. Turn the bike on and the noise went away. I played with the starter/reverse button a bit and no noise when I shut the bike off. My first suspicion is dirty switch. I'm going to spray the switch with cleaner and see if I still have this problem but I am also looking for any other thoughts out there as to what I should be looking for.
Re: reverse dilemma
Sounds like you have a starter relay solenoid sticking. I would check the A solenoid to see if its stuck. Usually if it does it once it will do it again.

Thanks, I'll keep it mind. I did spray the switches and no problem so far.

Re: reverse dilemma
Whatever you do, don’t engage reverse if you suspect a starter solenoid latching up. If it latches and you engage reverse, it can break the reverse idler gear and require an engine out of frame repair.
