Low speed sputter on throttle up. 2006 GL1800

Post by WiseGuy »

I have an 06 GL1800 that is acting up. When the engine heats to normal temp, I get a sputter when throttling up under load. When the clutch is in or when it's in neutral, no problem. When the engine is cold, no problem. But when hot sputter. Also, I hear a very slight low end knocking when idling. Anyone have any experience with this?

I'm not 100% sure its a "Flat spot" ... its a stumble or a stutter in the engine. It feels like the engine isn't getting enough gas, or that feeling you get when you're in too high of a gear. There's an audible knocking in the engine.

How many miles? Have you owned since new? A recent issue? Any work done just prior to this symptom?

I few things come to mind. A dose of fuel injector cleaner, replace spark plugs, check valve tappet clearances and replace air filter (I know this one is scary but not really that bad).

After all this, do an ECM reset. To do this, roll it outside when the bike is cold but the air is hot. Start the engine and do not touch the throttle. Wait until the cooling fans come on then turn the key off. Restart and let us know how it works.

You can check this out: https://www.gl1800riders.com/threads/st ... st-3022585 for other options as well. Worse case is you may need a new ECM.

68k miles. I bought it used with 4800 miles way back in 2008. I have not had any work done recently to it. Thanks for the advice, I'll try that and report back.

For about $20, get a long "gooseneck" camera that plugs into your phone and snake it down the intake to see if there are rodents setting up shop on your air filter.

If not, you saved yourself four hours of labor, and you have a nifty camera in your toolbox.

The inspection camera is a nice tool to have.

Given your symptoms and mileage, I would suggest you go forward and change the air filter to eliminate that as a source.

Anytime a 5th gen is not running well, the ADG starts knocking. Once a Wing is back to running normal, your ADG noise will lessen. Your issue is probably do to an ignition problem. How old are your spark plugs? Per the maintenance schedule, they need changed every 16k. Other possibilities are spark plug wires and ignition coil(s).
