2003 GL1800 Fairing vents chrome install

Post by tweety286 »

Good morning guys, I recently purchased a 2003 GL1800 and want to replace the large fairing air vents with some chrome aftermarket ones. Does anyone know how to remove the stock ones and replace them with the chrome replacements? I checked Youtube but didn't see the video addressing my issue. See photo attachment...

Most of the chrome ones just install over the OEM with two sided sticky tape.

The "shark" fin type have the sticky tape, but the ones I have replace the stock version. Kuryakan (sp?) Garage has the video showing the sticky tape kind. but not the complete replacement kind.

They snap into place. You can take the old ones out by using a stiff credit card or plastic screw driver to wedge one side or the other to lift it out. Look at your new ones they have a dimple on the sides that just press back in. I bought my bike from a 1st time owner and he had the aftermarkets chrome on it. I took them off after buying OEM because the after market did not fit well and one side kept popping out.
It ain't the destination but the getting there. You are not lost until you run out of gas.

Have you tried to check some articles on Google for the step by step procedure?

As per the microfiche it appear that there is one screw used to hold the "gills" in place...here is a link to the microfiche:

Re: 2003 GL1800 Fairing vents chrome install & starter problem

Post by tweety286 »

1st question/statement...it seems like the fairing vents have a screw that holds them on per user, "wingpilot08" (As per the microfiche). Another user says I could use a plastic screwdriver to remove the stock grills. Not sure which way to go...

2nd question...the bike won't start now. The starter motor won't kick over, so I'm replacing the starter relays first. I've seen from videos that the bike has two starter relays...one for forward movement and one for the reverse gear. Is this correct? The 2nd relay is buried behind the left saddlebag and it's very difficult to reach. I rarely use the reverse gear anyway. Can I just replace the 1st starter relay behind the battery and see if that will start the bike? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message...

It is always preferable to test and diagnose an issue rather then just throwing parts at it to see if it works. A few minutes with a volt meter can check those relays and the signals that go to them.

I would clean and check your battery connections and make sure the battery is charged and up to snuff before you throw parts at it. If you can get it to crank, check your voltage as its cranking to see if you get a voltage drop.
