Kill switch issues from "new" ebay part

Post by flyday58 »

2008 GL1800 Navi. Bought a switch advertised as new off eBay to replace the one that was on the bike because the paint was worn off and I'm anal about those things. After the install the bike started right up. I bumped the handlebar and she died. Started right back up but when I tapped on top of the kill switch, it died again.

In going through recalls this morning I noticed one for 2001 models on a recall for kill switches doing this exact thing. They don't list part numbers for the bad switch units, anyone have an idea? I've been upset since I got this "new" switch, seller claimed they bought it but it didn't fit their bike. The cruise button didn't work and now this. They wanted $130 for "new", thought that was a deal. So it goes.

If anyone knows how to tell or if you even can, I'd appreciate it. The fix looks like replacing the contacts so might see if they're still available. Partzilla says 2-3 days lead time but man, what a job. Thanks in advance.

Can you get the old, working one repainted?

That's the anal part, it's just the red markings for kill and run. It's not like I don't know which is which. That's what I get for wanting that new look!

You sure its new? I had that problem with my kill switch some time back..Sometimes a bump in the road and the bike just died?
Finally figured it was the kill switch..so all I did was rotate it back and forth a few dozen times and no more problem.

If your original switch was working OK and the new switch looks OK, can you put the old switch internals into the new switch housing?

Thanks guys. Switch was listed as "new" on ebay but I really think I it was installed for a while, as there are water stains on the housing like it's been sitting in the weather, plus a thin coat of brown dirt on the harness. I've exercised the switch a bit and will before each ride. Since I just got it all back together I'll wait till winter sets in to where I can't ride (I live in a canyon where the road ices over in spots for a few months) before taking it apart and swapping parts. The recall also lists a kit that Partzilla says they can get to replace the contacts so I might just do that.
Cheers and safe riding.

FYI ... don't confuse a recall issue from the past with your issue. Your 2008 was not part of the recall. Your "new" switch should work as you're expecting it to work ... like a new one. If it doesn't, there is something either wrong with your switch assembly, how it was installed, or possibly there is another problem.

For 5th gens, over their 17 year span, there are 3 seporate part numbers for the kill switch assembly. A 2001 kill switch assy is a completely different part number then one for a 2008. Your Wing's switch assy has lights in it, and add'l wires in it to support them ... the 2001-2003's switch assy. don't have all that.

If you need to see all recalls for 5th gens, go to my web page www.justwings.com > printed material > recalls.
