The frustrating task of finding that PART
The frustrating task of finding that PART
We've all been there. You need a specific cosmetic or mechanical part for the Wing, and you're well aware of the numerous Wing websites that sell New Old Stock parts for the Wing. Yet, you discover an astronomical cost when finally finding the part.
In the "why is that" cloudy thought process, there must be an answer for "why" parts for a GoldWing are so costly. After all, GoldWings -- especially the 2001-2017 models, were manufactured in mass quantity, and you'd think parts would be so readily available that a much lower cost
for parts would be the norm. It's not, of course. Wing parts are expensive and leads to some Wing owners (like me) searching Ebay and other websites just to avoid Mother Honda's OEM costs.
I'm encountering the great "search" escapade, now. I had recently performed the "Bozo" act of accidentally tipping my '05 into a Garage wall. Damaged the entire left-mirror assembly, (Part # 88120-MCA-A00ZM), and I discover the new (entire assembly) part as offered by vendors and Mother Honda in the $300-$320 range. Ouch. I should have ran my own head into the wall, instead of the Wing's mirror assembly, and the medical costs would have been far less.
I've checked so many websites for the part. Frustrating. I'll now just buy the part new from Mother Honda at their (highly-inflated) cost. When considering we're talking about a mass-produced "plastic and die-cast" part, in my case, it's really unfortunate that Honda demands such a high cost for such a mass-produced part. So, there's my rant for the day. (And, yes, my Wing was absolutely pristine. It's NOT now)!

The parts aren't expensive. What is expensive is the warehousing of the part for YEARS before it eventually gets sold - and that's what you're paying for.
I had a brand new, old-stock mirror assembly for a 1989 PC800 here that I had forgotten that I had. I was going through some stuff and found it, unopened, in a Honda box. I recently put it on eBay, and the buyers bid it up to almost $500!

You can purchase brand new aftermarket chrome mirrors - both sides as a set - for considerably less than the Mother Honda OEM mirrors. Just saying. They look fine with all the other chrome on the bikes I see, and they work fine.

I have an 89 and a 94 PC, both need a mirror but I'll just live with the damage on the ones that are installed. Both fairing access strips (the first to come off when removing the shelter) on the GL have broken tabs from the PO. They're $85 each in the correct color from servicehonda.com so again, I'll just live with it. Maybe. They ARE available at this point, so...WingAdmin wrote: ↑Sat Oct 23, 2021 1:11 pm The parts aren't expensive. Re: The frustrating task of finding that PART
Being a professional mechanic, and working on many vehicals over the years, I don't consider GW parts expensive at all. If you think they are, go to a Porsche dealer and buy a singel lug nut ... if I recall, a single lugnut for an 1986 911 in 1995 was more then $18.
It also surprises me how well Honda supports the products they make. Basically for 17 years, they fully supported every part for 5th gen Wings. An example of poor support is having a Yamaha Transcontinental Tour and waiting for a part for over a year to come from Japan.

I replaced my left side mirror last year on my 2005 and was lucky to find a color match. But, I almost bought a pair of chrome mirrors because they were much cheaper. But, I don't like a lot of chrome so I paid for what I got.
It ain't the destination but the getting there. You are not lost until you run out of gas.

Re: The frustrating task of finding that PART
Many aftermarket parts manufacturers chrome plate their plastic parts. Why? Because it means they don't have to produce and warehouse painted parts in every available color, and people don't want to have to paint their new parts to match their bike - they want to just buy it and screw it in place. For them, chrome is fine.
If you do want a NEW part, you can buy one of the aftermarket chromed parts and soak it in Mr. Muscle Professional Floor Cleaner which will strip the chrome off without harming the plastic. You can then paint it in the color of your choice.

My neighbor used to have a Harley before he got into Goldwings. He would brag about HD standing for Hundred dollars. When he bought a Goldwing I told him they call it a Goldwing because buying some aftermarket parts you need to trade in your gold . He laughed until the 1st time he went to buy a trunk rack and some highway pegs.
Re: The frustrating task of finding that PART
Ive also bought some used body parts and gone to my local jobber and have them match the paint and repainted them myself. Sometimes you get lucky on Craigslist or some of the wing forums.
