I'm having a strange issue with my turn signals on my 2006 Wing. They quit working last week but the bike starts and drives fine. Fuse is good so I checked the battery and it showed 12.5V with the engine off and 14.3V with the engine running. I took the battery out, charged it, then took it to the battery shop to have it tested. It tested fine of course. After reinstalling the battery and cleaning the terminals, the turn signals worked. I drove it a few hundred miles with no problem. Today, they quit working again. At one point during my ride, I stopped and flipped the switch back and forth a few times quickly and the signals worked a couple of times then quit again. When I got home, I connected the battery charger and the turn signals started working. They are still working now with the engine running or off. I was going to clean the contacts on the signal switch but can't get it far enough apart to access the switch. I removed the two phillips screws and the housing comes in two parts but won't come apart much. How do I get the switch open enough to access the contacts? Is there anything else that I can check? BTW the emergency flashers work so I have ruled out the flasher unit.
Thanks for the help,
Glenn

Re: Turn Signal Problem
Sounds like you need to take apart the turn signal switch and clean it. The contacts get cruddy and the dielectric grease gets road grime in there. My 1500 did the same thing when I got it. The contacts were corroded and the dielectric grease was sticky and nasty. Cleaned everything out, put in fresh grease, they worked great. Smooth as butter.
This is how the switch comes out and apart on the 1500. The switch should be the same for the 1800. It will give you an idea on what it inside the switch. Be real careful when taking it apart. The ball bearings will fall out and you will never find them again!

Re: Turn Signal Problem
My problem is getting the housing off the handlebars so I can access the switch. The lower section seems to be attached to the bars and I can't see how to take it off. The top section comes loose after remove the two screws from the bottom but doesn't come up high enough to access the switch.

Re: Turn Signal Problem
Turns out the flasher was bad. Replaced it and now they work. The only problem is that pushing in the switch does not cancel the turn signal. I have to push it a bit to the opposite side. Is this a switch issue?

Re: Turn Signal Problem
Sorry I don't recall for sure, but your system might be associated to the spring inside breaking. Here at JustWings - GL1800 Specialty Service and Repair, we would replace the switch. Some DIYr's will disassembly the switch assembly, clean it, and Jerry Rig the repair with some other spring.
To seporate the halves, you'll have to rotate the top forward and you'll see the screw for the low clasp.
