I'm stuck. I recently bought a 2002 GL1800. It came with floorboards and a heel-toe shifter. Not my favorite but let's see if I get used to it. I'm trying to do some overdue maintenance.
Problem is, I can't remove the left side panel to get to the coolant reservoir because the shifter is in the way. And apparently a special tool is required to remove it? I tried to use two allen wrenches and a screwdriver to unscrew it, but it won't budge.
Does anyone else have this setup? Can you show me a photo of what the special tool looks like, or where I might find one?

I do not have a photo , but I can try to describe it.
It is a 2 pin spanner, about 4 inches long, 3/4" wide flat steel handle with the handle portion angled out about 20 to 30 degrees, the head has two small short pins that stick out to engage the holes in the bolt.
I will say on my (long gone 2013) that bolt worked loose and I was able to retighten it using a pair of needle nose pliers enough to get me home. I applied a bit of loctite to mine just to ensure that did not happen again, if the previous owner did the same you may want to try applying some heat to the bolt to break the loctite loose. The tool is pretty much a Mickey Mouse design.
You can get pin spanners from Harbor Freight here is one that may work.

That pdf helped. I had looked around for the manufacturer or instructions but couldn't find it. You found the right one.
PO says he didn't have this wrench. I'll go get a pin wrench from harbor freight today.

Make sure it has the right sized pins - there are different diameters. I have one like this, which adjusts both the width as well as the pin diameter:

I still think that, if all you want to do is remove the cover and access the coolant tank, you only need to remove the assembly and the pin wrench is not required.

You're right! I didn't understand this before.
A 6mm Allen wrench on those two covered bolts took the whole floor board off and I was able to get to it then.
Unfortunately I had already stopped by HF and spent $8 on another crappy tool that didn't work!

As Andy says, to remove the engine cover, remove the heal-toe assembly.
