Hi, this 2002 GL1800 is new to me. While doing some overdue maintenance, I noticed something odd.
The bike idles smooth and runs great.
However, if I open the throttle just very slightly and hold it, the RPM will surge up and down on its own. I can hear some kind of servo or valve opening and closing down below, which seems to be making it do this.
I took a video.
Is this normal?

Re: RPM surging under partial throttle
It's not uncommon, and might be fixed with a simple ECM reset.
Without touching the throttle, start your bike and let it idle until the fans kick on and off again, then turn off the bike.
If it still happens after that, I'd make sure the battery connections are tight and I'd test my battery with a carbon pile tester, then I'd make sure the fuel wasn't old or contaminated in some way.

Re: RPM surging under partial throttle
One thing I learned when I purchased my used 06 Goldwing, it acted differently until I put close to 1,000 miles on it. The PO didn't drive it alot, IMO and the more I rode it some of the weird quirks went away, just sayin....ride it!!

Re: RPM surging under partial throttle
This is the “old dead spot at 1100-1500 rpm” thing. Every 01-05 will do this if you get the throttle just right. There’s no fix for it, just give it more gas and stay out of that zone with your throttle.two_wheeled wrote: ↑Sat Feb 05, 2022 11:39 pm Hi, this 2002 GL1800 is new to me.
