SCMG Pathfinder LED Lights

Post by echinus1988 »

I have the 2006 GL1800 and upgraded the headlights to the SCMG Pathfinder LEDs a while back.

I have my lights set to the lowest height but kept getting flashed to lower my high beams when riding. I finally drove in front of my bike while my son rode my bike.

The two lights on the left side (when sitting on the bike) are distinctly brighter than the two on the right.

I was very careful putting them in, checking that they were seated properly, and then connected correctly.

I didn't see anything different on the boxes so I put one box (two lights) on one side, one box (two lights) on the other. Did I place two high beams on the left side and two low beams on the right?

Did you use the manual adjustment to adjust height or just the electronic adjustment on the fairing?

Good question, I used the dial on the left side. It's dialed to the lowest setting. My problem is, the lights look brighter on the left side than on the right.

Would that cause the lights to look brighter on the left side?

On my 2016 all four lights are the same. The only difference between low & high beams are the reflectors. Is that the same for the 2006?

I'm just wondering if it is possible to have installed both high beam bulbs on the left if they are different for the 2006. Or if for some reason you were sent different bulbs and just happened to have installed both brighter ones on the left by luck.

After going back and re-reading your post, I think this is what you might have done. If, that is, there is a difference in your two bulbs unlike my 2016.

I may have missed something but I didn't see a difference in the boxes so I figured they were the same and like your bike, the reflectors did the work.

Guess I'll contact the company and ask them.

The bulbs are all the same.

There are individual adjustments for the left and right side up under the fairing. I have seen many that were not adjusted equally.

And to answer the question, yes it would look like one side is brighter than the other if they are not adjusted the same vertically.

The headlight adjusters are talked about in section 20 of the OEM service manual in my 2003 manual. I think it is in the same place in the 2006 manual.

That's good to know. The only problem I have is my service manual is on my storage unit!

I'm going there tomorrow so I'll check to see if I can locate it and look that up.

Thank you for the information.

G'day there Mike B - I was trying to explain this manual adjustment system to some of my fellow Aussie nah sayers a couple of months ago. They complained of having to turn the electric headlight dip switch all the way down on low beam to stop blinding the on coming traffic. I explained that once the manual adjustment has been done correctly (both sides) the electric headlight dip switch functions as normal - I'll admit that this was far easier to complete whilst I was at the air filter replacement stage of my service for both Installing the Pathfinder LED's and making the necessary manual adjustments as above.
I have copied the diagram and will send same to my fellow Wing Club members to spread the knowledge far and wide. Cheers and have a beaut day

The adjusters are easily accessible from the front underneath the headlight assembly on either side of the forks. No plastic needs to be removed. You just have to see up in that black hole to find the adjusters. A good flashlight helps a lot.

From box to box, there should be no differance in the bulbs. Both boxes should have the same part numbers on them. Therefore, if you have a brightness problem, these can be the reasons. Some bulbs are not installed correctly, or possibly there is deteriorating chome on the reflective part of the lamp assembly. To check for deteriorating chrome, turn the lamps off and thru the lens from the front.

Here is how we change the aim here once we install LED headlamps. Keep in mind there are 3 goals, and the 3rd one is most important.
1. rider should have good lighting
2. their aim should not annoy on-comming traffic
3. when riding at night in a group, never should the rider in front of you be annoyed to where they are always looking in their mirror. By electrically setting them lower, the annoyance should go away.

Center stand the Wing where the headlamps are about 15-16' from the wall. Electrically set the headlamps to their lowest setting. Now look at the main blast of light at the wall. See the bottom and top of the light blast ??? Now adjust the top of one to the bottom of the other. Your probably lowing the adjustment 6-9". Adjust the other to match the one you just adjusted.

Thank you for that. I'm going to try and manually set the lights. No garage right now so I'm working on how to do it.
