GPS works but won't track

Post by KabRides »

When I purchased my 2012 Gold Wing ,I noticed the GPS was not actively tracking. I mentioned this to the shop I purchased from, and they did something to it and it worked.
A few years have passed and I have moved, and you guessed it the GPS has stopped tracking again.

Has anyone seen this, and know the magic required to get the unit working again?

You could disconnect the positive battery cable with the possibility of a reset.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

To clarify ... does tracking mean that when you go down the road that the map changes to show your movement ???

That is correct, wherever the bike starts, is where the GPS shows as being, even after a day on the road, it shows initial location. Of course it will not guide,as it sees no movement.

I guess it's possible that you have an antenna fault. If you had the bike apart recently maybe the antenna got disconnected and or broken.

I do not have a nav equipped goldwing so I don't know where the antenna is. You will have to look it up and see if you can find it and then follow the antenna line.

I think I have seen that happen on my 06 but its been so long I dont recall the reason or even if I ever figured it out.
But having said all that go to system setup/info and try resetting defaults.

I am assuming the speedo is working. Does the gps pointer relocat to the current location ever time you stop ? If so check the speed sense line to the nav board.

Yes speedo works. As long as you dont turn off the bike, the GPS shows the same location.

Most likely, the speed sense line to the nav board is the problem. If it were me, I would check all the connectors from going to the nav board.
Also check and see if the speed sense line to the nav board has the nav override mod. This is a mod where you put a switch in the speed sense line and the nav board. When the switch is one way, it opens the speed sense line, and you can access the nav menu while moving. But while the switch is in this position, the gps location will not track. When the switch is in the other position, the nav will track.

It's been my experiance that happens when the antenna is not positioned or installed correctly. I experianced the same when one came in, and the antenna was connected but laying in front of the right radiator. Its proper position is under the visor facing up. To get to it, you'll have to remove shelter to disconnect its connector, the garnish, the windscreen, and the visor.

If the visor was replaced, the old bracket that it attaches to may now be incorrect.
